About This Item

London: Faber and Faber, 1962. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good Indeed. 9" by 6". None. A collection of four novels published together for the first time, written by British novelist Lawrence Durrell. First thus. Four novels bound into one volume. The Alexandria Quartet is a series of novels offering perspectives on a single set of events and characters in Alexandria, Egypt, during the Second World War. The fourth novel of the series is set six years later. The exploration of relativity and subject-object relations allow individual perspectives of a single set of evens, with the fourth book offering a display of the changes over time. Written by Lawrence George Durrell, an expatriate British novelist, poet, dramatist, and travel writer best known for this series. In the original red cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light wear to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrapper is also very smart with light shelf wear and sunning to the spine. The odd small closed tear to the edges of the panels. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Near Fine

Synopsis

The Alexandria Quartet is a tetralogy of novels by British writer Lawrence Durrell, published between 1957 and 1960. A critical and commercial success, the books present four perspectives on a single set of events and characters in Alexandria, Egypt, before and during World War II. As Durrell explains in his preface to Balthazar, the four novels are an exploration of relativity and the notions of continuum and subject-object relation, with modern love as the subject.
