About This Item

Los Angeles: International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, 1940. Hardcover. Near Fine. Original hinged metal binding, painted green with burgundy lettering (either printed or hand-painted) on the front board. Minor wear, very good or better. Ready-made scrapbook with patially printed text, either provided or sold to those attending evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson's summer youth crusader camps, which began in the 1930s and continued into the ‘40s. The scrapbook includes a printed photo of McPherson, an introduction by Harold Chalfant, the leader of the Foursquare Crusaders, and sections for autographs, nature observations, and notes. The yearly camps were held at Camp Radford, owned by the city of Los Angeles in the San Bernardino Mountains. The owners of the album, Mildred and Willard Pratt of San Luis Obispo, filled in a few pages of the class notes and collected the autographs of friends made at camp. The controversial McPherson (1890-1944), also known as Sister Aimee, was a Los Angeles-based evangelist and media celebrity in the 1920s and ‘30s who incorporated radio in her weekly sermons from Angelus Temple to reach larger audiences.
