Description:
1916. [SKETCHTOUR GENRE] Kanao Bun'endo, publisher. HANSHIN MEISHO-ZUE A folding album of 24 (of 30) prints - oban size color woodcut, printed by Nishimura Kumakichi and published by Kanao Bun'endo in 1916,17. The finest of all of Bun'endo's remarkable porfolio productions, The HANSHIN MEISHO ZUE is a great rarity, even individual prints from the series of 30 are by no means common. We are missing only prints #7, 21-25 (6 in all). There are two prefatory pages, one is a map of the trip around western Japan depicted herein, the other a table of contents. Also, one of the Akamatsu Rinsaku designed portfolio cover prints has been mounted as preface to the whole series, while four others have been trimmed and mounted on two pages at the end. The artists who designed the prints were Akamatsu Rinsaku (1878-1953), Noda Kyuho (1879-1971), Hata Tsuneharu(1883-? ), Mizushima Nihou (or Nihofu) (1884-1958) and Nagai Hyosai (1882-1945). by [Japanese Watercolors - 19th century]

- Hardcover
[Japan, 1810. Folio (33 x 27.5 cm). Late 19th or early 20th century marbled calf, raised bands, spine gilt extra, gilt label, a.e.g., with watercolor river scenes on paper onlaid as doublures. Binding extremities rubbed, images offset a bit to interleaves, occasional patches of darkening to backgrounds of a few images, one corner of an interleaf creased and a bit torn, but otherwise very good to near fine. A lovely collection of watercolor images on silk of birds, moths and butterflies, the artist unknown, but the paintings executed with great skill. The twenty-two individual panels vary somewhat in size, but approximate 24 x 20 cm to 20 x 16cm, and each includes several specimens: in the case of the birds, 2-4, in the case of the Lepidoptera, 5-10. The individual panels are mounted to heavy stock via blue silk bordering. The birds are identified via manuscript captions next to each bird; the Lepidoptera are not captioned. A pencil note on the free endsheet in an early hand dates the paintings somewhat earlier (1700-1750 Shijo School) than do those later in its most recent provenance: tipped in unidentified mid-20th century auction description (dating the paintings to early 19th century) - private collection.

Most of the photographs in this album. circa 1895-1925, were taken in Mie-Ken (or "Mie prefecture"), part of the Kansai region on the main island of Honshu. Description:
1721 Japanese Samurai Katana Woodblock Swords New Blade Makers Ryoko Kanda 3vAn interesting Edo and Meiji woodblock-print of 'New Blade Maker's List.' This collection is the stamping of amateur warriors' blades and polishers throughout the Edo period and is equivalent to the sword of the Meiji era and later called "modern sword.". It follows up on the older collections of blade writings which summarized the accumulated knowledge of amateur warriors' blades and polishers throughout the Muromachi period. After the battle of Sekigahara in Keicho 4 (AD 1599), the Tokugawa shogunate opened and war ended, demand and production methods for swords changed, and later works came to be called "new swords."
This rare 1721 edition is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations of different blades throughout!

Description:
Rare complete copy of Keika Hasegawa's Keika Hyakugiku (100 chrysanthemums by Keika)(The British Museum only has Volumes 1 and 2, the Smithsonian only 2 and 3.)75 colour woodblock prints (all published), including eight double-page, from this seminal book on the cultivation of chrysanthemums. Volumes 1 and 2 published in July 1893 and Volume 3 published in December 1903. Chrysanthemum cultivation came to Japan from China in the 8th century and the flower was later adopted as the Emperor's crest. Over the centuries, extraordinary hybrids of elegant shapes and vibrant colours were produced, many of which are recorded in this book.Little is known about the artist Keika Hasegawa. (The name Keika is usually a woman's name.) Active in the final years of the 19th century, he also produced books of patterns for kimono and washi paper such as Biko Zukan (Art Book) 1894, and Kyoka Zuan (Patterns of Kyoto), 1897. Original wraps are grubby and worn, interior slightly browned and edges worn. A few prints with…

"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
The Sakuteiki, or "Records of Garden Making," was written nearly 1000 years ago, making it the oldest work on Japanese gardening; in fact, the oldest book on gardening in the world! In this edition of the Sakuteiki, the authors provide both an English-language translation of this classic work; and an introduction to the cultural and historical context that led to the development of Japanese gardening. A Japanese court noble wrote the Sakuteiki during the Heian period (794-1184). During this critical era in Japanese history cultural influences on poetry, clothing-and gardening-that had been imported from China and Korea over the previous centuries were reexamined and reinterpreted into their unique Japanese forms. The Sakuteiki contains the first systematic record of this new… Read More
