About This Item

New York: Simon & Schuster. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1983. 1st American Edition. Hardcover. 0671492071 . Hardcover with dustjacket, first American printing as indicated by the publisher's "1" in the number line on copyright page, book is in excellent condition, there is a very faint vertical crease on the first blank end-paper which is too insignificant to affect our highest condition rating of "Fine," the jacket has a few minor flaws: two short edge-tears on the front panel, mild wear to the spine-ends, a short crease on the front flap, and a small amount of mild rubbing, the jacket is clean and presentable, the original price (22.50) is present and a professional (removable) mylar cover is included, "The extraordinary story of the brilliant scientist whose 'Enigma' device broke Germany's most secret WWII code, who pioneered the modern computer age and who finally fell victim to the Cold-War world of military secrets and sexual scandal," illustrated; ; 587 pages .

Synopsis

ANDREW HODGES was born in suburban London in 1949. Since 1972 he has been working on the theory of twistors -- the new approach to the problems of fundamental physics pioneered by the mathematician Roger Penrose. His interest in the mysterious figure of Alan Turing developed partly from his mathematical background, but also from his participation in the gay liberation movement of the 1970s. In 1977 he decided only a full-length biography of Turing could do justice to the issues involved, and this, his first full-length book, appeared in 1983. He has since returned to mathematics and is a Research Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford University.
