About This Item
The viewer is approximate height 14 cm and 7.5 cm in diameter; opaque alabaster cylindrical egg-shaped body on a waisted stem, with hand-painted decorations and inscription, now partly rubbed away, which would have read 'Think of Me', fitted with twin alabaster handles rotating a spindle revealing two naïvely hand-coloured wood engraved scenes and one of geological specimens.
A good example of this memento purchased as a souvenir probably on a holiday visit to Margate in Kent. The twin alabaster handles rotate to reveal a scenes of Margate Harbour and Parade.
Little is know of the origin of these optical curiosities, however they may have been produced as a cottage industry in north-west Leicestershire from the mid Victorian period and thence spread to other parts of the country as souvenirs for tourists.
