Original red cloth, spine chipped at both ends, gilt titles on spine, stylishly written ownership on fep and annotations on final page preceding ads, some foxing to endpapers and bookplate on rear end page; else a very good copy with an interesting association. Second Impression. 334 pp. frontispiece with guard. 16 pp. ads. at rear. 1 vols. 8vo. Dr. William Francis Rienhoff, Jr.'s copy. Osler's essays on John Bassett, the eponymous student; Thomas Dover, physician and buccaneer; Keats, the apothecary poet; John Locke as physician; Oliver Wendell Holmes; Sir Thomas Browne; and others.

This copy was owned by Dr. William Francis Rienhoff, Jr., a professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins whose research on the study of the thyroid gland changed how it was treated, and was also one of the first researchers to link environmental factors with lung cancer He received the first Gold Medal of the American Association for the Study of Goiter in 1930. This copy bears his ownership and a few notes on the text at the rear of the book.
