Cover design with fields of roses and other foliate bands of decoration centering a cartouche with Adam and Eve "unter dem Apfelbaum." Brass clasps partly remaining on front cover; not present on rear, leaving some holes in rear binding. SUMMARY: This rare volume is an encyclopedic presentation of scholars both classical and medieval, upon matters of agriculture, as well as a medical treatise including substantial information about the prevention, treatment of symptoms, and cure for the Plague. Includes Roman 4th century AD agricultural texts known collectively as De Re Rustica, which were rediscovered in the middle ages by humanist manuscript-hunters in Swiss and French monasteries. CONTENTS: Vorrede (Preface): including dedication to Von Alvensleben; a laudatory poem to the author by fellow pastor Valentinus Cremicovius; and another poem in praise of agricultural life by D.J.F.G; and an Ecclesiastical Kalendar. [1] Columella: Vom Ackerbau (About Agriculture.) [2] Palladii Rutilii: Von dem Bawers Werd (From the Farmers.) The previous two parts were part of the rediscovered classical work on agricultural theory and management known as De Re Rustica.[3] Nüßlich Arznen Buch of Alexii Pedemontani,(AKA Girolamo Ruscelli,) trans. by Johannem Jacobum Werkerum (Doctor's Book.) A medical treatise in 50 parts, plus a "third book" of another eleven parts. Treatment of and Cure for plague. The most annotated part of the book, in old script, to the medical information herein, including mention of Thomas Keslari (Kessler) and his "vierhundert schöner außerlesener chymicher Process." [4] Theodore Maius: Bericht von Urin (Report on Urine) with a preface from Pastor of Alvensleben, Ionnes Schraderus. This section is a medical and philosohical discussion of health and spiritual wellbeing based on urological symptoms. Also, similar material is surveyed from the ancients: Bericht von Urin (Report on Urine) des Hochgelarten D. Appolinarus auß Hippocrate, Galeno,(Galen,) Avicenna, Zsacco (?) etc. Author THEODORE MAIUS, [variously spelled: Theodor Majus, Maium, May, Mayus, Mey, Meye or Mai], born approx. 1569 in Sangerhausen, Germany; died 1623/24. He matriculated at the University of Wittenburg in 1588 where he studied theology for eight years. He wrote a number of books from 1606-1619, much of it published in Magdeburg. He was also employed as a pastor; in various other works, he describes himself as "Deacon of Wolmirstedt" (1606), the "Pastor of Ebendorff" (1608,) and "Pastor of Amffurt" (1619.) (D. Klaus, Bibliographisches Handbuch). Maius would publish a number of additional works more specifically along this astrological/astronomical vein. The scientific content of Maius's work suggests him as a fore-runner to Johan Baptist von Helmont, considered the father of biochemistry. Aside from his fame for the discovery of various gases and their effects, von Helmont also invented the gravimetric analysis of urine; Maius's 1610 booklet Urin Buchlein, contained herein, was well-received, being twice reprinted in 1738 and 1746. PREVIOUS OWNERS: The title page lists several former owners' signatures and stamps: "M. Johan Viliz, Kohlbergi anno 1633," was a religious author and pastor of the church of Saint Wipezting in Quedlinburg, Saxony-Anhalt (cnp00441570). A library stamp on the title page indicates the book was once in the library of the BARON F.A. RIEDESEL in Lauterbach. Frieherr (Baron) Friedrich Adolf Riedesel, zu Eisenbach (1738-1800,) was famously Commander of the Brunswick troops in Canada during the American Revolution. Another title page notation is made of Hedersleben, ('16.) A notorious outbreak of Rinderpest, or cattle-plague in 1866 killed more than 90 people there. The Rothamstead Collection of the Lawes Agricultural Library appears as a penciled reference number, with the acquisition date of 1934. EXCERPT IN TRANSLATION: "The Pestilence [Plague] is a disease which, like a ravenous animal, quickly destroys people, entire cities and countries. The principle cause of this disease is the Wrath of God for the Sons of Men. There is... poisoning of the air, influenced by the stars, making stinking steam or dust upon the earth...sighing winds, stinking mists of secret origin...Signs of the contagion are first ignored: flaming comets and dragons shoot burning arrows from the sky which ignite sorrel-scented fumes of steam upon the earth..." (from "Bevarung der Pestilenz," the sixth chapter of Alexii Pedemontani's part of this volume). ALCHEMISTS: The Alexii Pedemontani work mentions "Michael auß Scotia", i.e. Michael Scot, a Scottish scholar and mathematician who wrote several books on astrology, and alchemical works in the Middle Ages. "Thomas Kesleri" (cnp02151328) or, Kessler, whose name appears in annotions to that portion of the book, was also born in Colmar, and later worked in Strasburg as a chemist and pharmacist. CONDITION: Good antiquarian condition. Head of spine chipped. Crack to bottom part of back hinge. Worm holes to title and final pages. Interior is age-toned with some minor spots, a bit of water damage to top edge of some pages, one small burn hole. LITERATURE: VD 17: one copy, Bayerische Staadtsbibliothek, Munich. WorldCat lists 9 additional print copies, OCLC no. 247983165 et al. Aslin, Mary S., "Library Catalogue of Printed Books and Pamphlets on Agriculture published Between 1471 and 1840, " Rothamsted Experimental Station (1940) p. 181. Not listed in Adams, Caillet, USTC or Wellcome. . First Edition. Hardcover; blind-tooled calfskin over wooden boards. Good.
