About This Item
Natl Book Network, May 1996. Paper Back. New. Maybe this is a book about touching. Then we would have to say it is also a book about hearing and seeing, tasting and smelling. Recovering wonder. Too often, we make it our task to render the things, people and circumstances of our lives familiar, ignoring their mystery (and their wildness). We are tired, says Rolheiser, worn out by our own irreverence. Yes, this is a book about touching. ''We are built for that task. We are destined for a great love, thus our eros is wide, our longing is infinite, our urge to embrace is completely promiscuous.'' So how do we reconcile this ''sublimity of tension''? We don't. That's Rolheiser's point. We need space within ourselves to mourn our own insatiability, to be blessed by being seen and then to bless by seeing. God's touch is always sacrament (manifesting Himself as the presence in all things), and recognizing Him, as the Psalmist writes, enlarges our heart.
