About This Item

Shepperton, Surrey: Ian Allan, 1998. 160 pp, 128 pp, 11 1/2" H - 2 volume set. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps/plans, reproductions. Volume 1. The Road to Alexandria - "Hitler, worried about the consequences of a total Italian collapse in North Africa, had decided to send in small numbers of German troops to bolster up the flagging and demoralised Italians. Between 14 and 20 February 1941, advance units of the Deutsches Afrika Korps began to arrive in Tripoli. They were soon in action against the British, and they and their commander - 'The Desert Fox' - were destined to become one of the most famous and respected fighting formations of any army in World War 2. In this first volume, George Forty traces the highlights of their initial momentous year in the desert. (It) is told in their own words by men of the Afrika Korps and the majority of their reminiscences and the spectacular photographs which illustrate them have never been seen by the general public before." Volume 2. The Long Road Back - ISBN 0711025800 - "The end of 1941 saw the DAK in Tripolitania, licking its wounds and preparing for another all-out drive on Cairo and Alexandria. (This volume) continues the story from January 1942 and details the history of Rommel's efforts to destroy the Eighth Army. As soon as he had received sufficient new equipment, fuel and reinforcements, he attacked with the same tactical brilliance he had demonstrated in 1941 and was within a stone's throw of winning the most glittering prize of all - the Suez Canal. Such an achievement would undoubtedly have changed the whole course of the war. But it was not to be." Interiors - both volumes have a previous owner's information whited out as well as a 'receive' stamp in volume 2 - all on the half-title pages. Exteriors - one or two soft small corner creases on the covers.. Not Signed. Reprint.. Soft Covers. Very Good.
