About This Item

New York: Crown Publishers, Inc, 1968. 3rd Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. 8x5x1. Third printing. Jacket edges rubbed with chips and tears, jacket price-clipped, jacket soiled. Page ridges lightly foxed. 1968 Hard Cover. 311 pp. Alex Haley plagiarized parts of this novel when writing Roots, and settled with Courlander and his publisher for $650,000 out of court. An extraordinary novel of epic proportions exploring the transition from freedom to slavery -- and focusing on the uprooted Africans trying to survive in alien surroundings. A young African boy, Hwesuhunu, is kidnapped from his homeland by French slave traders, and endures the terrors of the Middle Passage and being sold into slavery. Hwesuhunu is brought to the island of Saint Lucia, and is later sold to a Georgia plantation for US$100.
