About This Item

Hartford, CT.: Columbian Book Company, 1872. xvi, 327pp. Crown octavo. Bound in half dark brown morocco leather and marbled boards; four raised bands and five compartments to the spine stamped with gold gilt lettering and decorations. Dark gray endpapers that look to be newer than the binding, though no other signs of restoration found. Gold gilt to the top edge of the text block. Heavily illustrated with full page and in-text black and white engravings. Some wear to the boards with a bit of rubbing along the edges and some abrasions to the leather on the fore and top edge of the front board. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown and signature to the verso of the front fly-leaf. Internally clean and an overall very good copy. All other copies listed online at the time this one was catalogued are bound in publisher's cloth, which leads us to believe that this copy was rebound at some point, though the binding is contemporary to the book. The majority of the illustrations were done by True Williams, who is best known for the illustrations he did for some of Mark Twain's works. This book is an entertaining narrative about the author's journey across some of the American states.
