About This Item
No. 930 of 1000 copies on vélin of an edition of 1025. Poster artist and etcher Ernest Haskell's copy of Maindron's second history of the poster, illustrated with seventy-two chromolithographic plates reproducing works by Jules Cheret, Toulouse-Lautrec, Mucha, Pal, Steinlen, and others. "Ernest Maindron was the great poster collector of the period. When he wrote Les Affiches Illustrées, a history of the poster based on the 10,000 examples in his possession, he had the happy idea of asking Cheret to use reductions by the Imprimerie Chaix of twenty of his best-known designs as colored illustrations...Ten years later Maindron published his far more significant sequel, Les Affiches Illustrées (1886-1895), which surveys the subsequent history of the poster, this time with seventy-two color plates by the Imprimerie Chaix, the majority after Cheret" (Ray, p. 468).
