About This Item
Hardcover, no dustjacket, John W. Lovell Company, New York, undated (circa 1890), Rugby Edition. Cover is gray with black and gold (gilded) lettering and decoration. Cover edges are fraying at the corners and at the spine. Surface of cover has light general wear--light abrasion to the design, minor scuffs and stains on the back. Binding is tight, inside is clean, nice, and unmarked. Many detailed black and white sketch-style illustrations to accompany the text. Book does have a faint musty or smoky smell, typical for the age. Overall a nicely preserved specimen of this quality book. Back in 1890, the Rugby Edition series was advertised as follows: "Rugby Edition of Books for Boys and Girls. These are handsome 12mo. volumes, substantially bound in best English cloth and stamped from original designs in colored ink and gold, price, 75 cents per volume."
