New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1895.. 1895.. Good. - Octavo, pictorial green cloth titled and decorated in gilt & black on the front cover & the spine. The covers are fubbed, stained and cocked. vii, [i] & 404 pages and 4 pages of ads. The binding is starting to crack and a few signatures are pulled. The leaves are slightly darkened with occasional soiling. A previous owner's name is penned on the front endpaper. Good. <p>First edition. The author, Frank R. Stockton's autograph signature is mounted onto the front pastedown.
Synopsis
Early in the spring of the year 1884 the three-masted schooner Castor, from San Francisco to Valparaiso, was struck by a tornado off the coast of Peru. The storm, which rose with frightful suddenness, was of short duration, but it left the Castor a helpless wreck. Her masts had snapped off and gone overboard, her rudder-post had been shattered by falling wreckage, and she was rolling in the trough of the sea, with her floating masts and spars thumping and bumping her sides.
