About This Item

London : Constable & Company Limited. , 1932. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5.5" . Not Stated. A first edition copy of this work by George Bernard Shaw, with illustrations throughout. The first edition. In the publisher's original cloth binding. With an engraved title page, four full page plates and fourteen vignette illustrations. Collated complete. 'The Adventures of the Black Girl in her Search for God' is a satirical allegory, telling the story of a young black woman who, when struggling to understand the words of her local Christian missionary, attempts to go out and 'seek' God. She meets several religious figures, including God and Jesus, as well as an atheist, but isn't satisfied with any of their responses. The story outraged the religious public, which ultimately led to its heavy demand. There have been numerous responses, both satirical and serious, from other creators, including 'The Adventures of the Black girl in her Search for Mr Shaw' by the journalist and activist, Mabel Dove Danquah. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with some shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with a few handling marks and the odd spot. Light age-toning to the edges. A tear and some offsetting to page 17. Very Good Indeed
