About This Item

The Civil War had ended, and Gov. Bullock was able to present his annual address to the Massachusetts Legislature on his proposed programs that would need legislative approval to meet the needs and his desires for the state's coming year, without worries about any unexpected war-time emergencies. The complete text of the address is contained in the booklet Address of His Excellency Alexander H. Bullock, to the Two Branches of the Legislature of Massachusetts, January 6, 1866. The booklet, which was printed in Boston by Wright & Potter, State Printers, measures approximately 5.75 inches wide by 9.25 inches tall, contains 56 pages and is string-bound (although three little holes adjacent to the spine indicate it may have once been differently bound). The front paper cover is missing, but the rear cover remains. The pages of text are very lightly tanned, with text that is clear and easily read. There are occasional indications of prior ownership, pencil comments, and wear along the edges. The overall condition of the item good/very good.

The illustrations accompanying this description show the item's title page, the first page of the address, and a typical 2-page spreads of text.

Alexander Hamilton Bullock (March 2, 1816 – January 17, 1882) was an American lawyer, politician, and businessman from Massachusetts. First a Whig and then a Republican, he served three terms (1866–69) as the 26th Governor of Massachusetts. He was actively opposed to the expansion of slavery before the American Civil War, playing a major role in the New England Emigrant Aid Society, founded in 1855 to settle the Kansas Territorywith abolitionists. He was for many years involved in the insurance industry in Worcester, where he also served one term as mayor. [Wikipedia]
