About This Item
Boston: John Wilson, Printer, 1850. Original Wraps. Good. Wraps. 24 pages. With appendix. Inscribed by the author: "Chas. H. Peirce, M.D. from his friend & classmate F.A. Whitney," on the upper front cover. Whitney was then minister of "The First Church." Evergreen Cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places. Whitney takes the consecration of the Evergreen Cemetery to reflect on the changing nature of burials and cemetery in European and American society, discussing the opening of modern burial places (in France 1804) as well as the lack of decoration and character in early American burial grounds. GOOD condition. Vertical fold crease present to the piece, with moderate to heavy browning and offsetting along the extremities. Minor soiling with a small dampstain at the upper rear cover. Small chip at the lower center fore edge. Interior solid with minor toning to the paper.
