About This Item

Washington City. Collectible - Acceptable. Washington, DC: William Cooper, 1812. NAP, possible first US edition. Two volumes in one. 12mo hardcover in early tree calf with red spine label and gilt banding to spine. 150+140pp. Fair. Spine creased and gilt banding quite worn, with several small holes to joints. The boards have several scuffs and scrapes, although the tree pattern remains clearly visible; rear board curling slightly outward at the edges. Corners bumped and rubbed; book generally quite edgeworn. Page toning about typical for the age. Bottom fore-corner frayed throughout, text unaffected. Front hinge paper starting at spine tips. Beautifully neat owner's name dated 1858 inked to front pastedown and first and second front free endpapers, with some ink transference to facing pages. This inscription is accompanied by a child's pencil scribbles, presumed dating from the same period, to front pastedown, recto and verso of both front endpages, and recto and verso of title page. Dampstaining throughout. Early inscription "the end" in blue ink to final page of volume two. Rear ads loosening and with piece missing from fore-edge; minimal loss of text. Rear free endpaper missing; child's pencil scribbles continue on rear pastedown. A well used but still readable book with a sound binding. Inquire if you need further information.

Synopsis

On the eve of his coming of age, a young Lord begins to see the truth of his parents' lives: his mother cannot buy her way into society no matter how hard he tries, and his father is being ruined by her continued attempts. The young Lord then travels to his home in Ireland, encountering adventure on the way, and discovers that the native residents are being exploited in his father's absence.

About Wonder Book

With 3 stores less than 1 hour outside the DC/Metropolitan area (1 in Gaithersburg, 1 in Frederick and 1 in Hagerstown, MD), we have the largest selection of books in the tri-state area. Wonder Book and Video has been in business since 1980 and online since 1997. We have over 1 Million books for sale on our website and another 1 Million books for sale in our 3 locations. We have a very active online inventory and as such, we can receive multiple orders for the same item. We fill those orders on a first come first serve basis, but will refund promptly any items that are out of stock. Since 1980 it has always been about the books. ALL kinds of books from 95 cent children\'s paperbacks to five figure rare and collectibles. A merging of the old and new is where we started, and it is where we are today. Our retail stores have always been places where a reader can rush in looking for a title needed for a term paper that is due the next day, or where bibliophiles can get lost \"in the stacks\" for as long as they wish. In 2002 USAToday recognized us as \"1 of 10 Great Old Bookstores\", and we have been featured in numerous other newspaper and TV stories including Washington Post and CSpan.
