Description:
Springfield: Bailhache & Baker, 1861. Paperback. 8vo. Original printed green wrappers. 8pp. Very good. Minor wear and light soiling, mainly to outer wrappers; small circular "New-York Historical Society" inkstamp dated 23 May 1864 at upper left corner of front wrapper. First edition. Illinois' Civil War governor calls a special session of the legislature in order to enact emergency war preparedness measures. After reviewing the traitorous actions of the "disloyal States" and the Union's "clearly and unmistakably in self-defense" response, Yates beseeches the legislature for sweeping reform, "the enactment of a practicable militia law." This he elaborates in detail. "Let us so act," he concludes dramatically, "that our children and our children's children, when we are laid in the dust, will hold us in grateful remembrance, as we do now bless the heroes and patriots who achieved our independence, and transmitted to us the priceless heritage of American liberty." Quite uncommon. Not in Sabin.

New York: Firth, Pond & Co, 1861. First Edition. Sheet Music. Very Good. Complete: 6 pages including the cover. Early Civil War music with a terrific cover showing five black misfit volunteers in various milita and zouave uniforms. Slightly trimmed and with nice corners and old tape binding so probably from an old bound collection of sheet music. Light marginal soiling. This comic song promises defeat for Great Britain should "John Bull" attempt to intervene in the war on the side of the South. Made very popular by Bryant's Minstrels.
