The contents contain five sections and in total gives the reader 34 informative chapters. A very generous 'list of illustrations' provided.....line drawings, vignettes, head and tail pieces and full-page b/w plates. The author begins his book by saying " England is not well known to the English people". The chapters are addressed to the English inhabitants who are unaware of the depth of their surroundings. He asks to look at England with fresh eyes. This author furnishes a wonderful tour...Section I deals with ''Some General Features'....the weather, history, English scenery, trees. Section II 'Up In Town'...London Pride, familiar figures, streets and shops, how to spend a wet afternoon or an odd hour in London, Sunday in London. Section III 'Down In The Country'....Inns, from the railway carriage, names of places and people, villages, pilgrimage: ancient and modern, some literary pilgrimages, roads, homes: ancient and modern. bridges, some older things, some new things, some good centres for short visits. Section IV 'A Nation of Shopkeepers'....Fairs and Markets, the world's worst grumbler, wool and cotton, coal, some of our fauna, the sea. Section V 'Some English Peculiarities'.... Our human factories, two leaders of opinion, the Old Vic, sport, a legal oddity and a government oddity and national jests. A great read - written with interest and humour. Rose cloth boards with rose embossed decoration to front board. Gilt title print to front board and spine still bright. gentle slant. A sound respectable book.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.
