SCOTTISH FOLK MUSIC HANDWRITTEN FOR PUBLICATION] MARJORY KENNEDY-FRASER, KENNETH MACLEOD, 3 HANDWRITTEN MUSIC SCORES WITH LYRICS, handwritten by music folklorist Nelson Sprackling (occasionally worked with Alan Lomax on folk music preservation) in preparation for publication by Boosey & Co., undated, but about 1910, Boosey published music works by Kennedy-Fraser and Macleod starting about 1908 through the 1920s with later reprintings in various editions, three 4-page music composition sheets 9-1/2" x 12-1/2", (1) A HEBRIDEAN SEA-REIVER'S SONG (Na Reubarean), Old Gallic Works [?] and translation from Kenneth Macleod Air from Penelope MacDonald Eriskay, arranged by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser, 4 full pages, score with lyrics, Nelson Sprackling handwrittten signature in upper right corner of first page, (2) THE ROAD TO THE ISLES [A Tramping Song], Songs of the Hebrides, (by) M. Kennedy-Fraser and Kenneth MacLeod, (published) Boosey & Co., ca. 1916 (sheet music published in 1917), 3 pages (of 4), Nelson Sprackling signature stamp in lower right corner, (3) THE ROAD TO THE ISLES, SONGS OF THE HEBRIDES and other Celtic Songs from the Highlands of Scotland, some collected and all arranged by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser, Boosey & Co., title page, on first inside page music piece title "The Road to the Isles – A Tramping Song", Words by Kenneth Macleod, To an air played by Malcolm Johnson…arranged for voice and piano (or harp) by Patuffa Kennedy-Fraser [daughter of Marjory], 3 pages, Nelson Sprackling handwritten signature i upper right corner; NOTES: Marjory Kennedy-Fraser, 1857-1930, Scottish singer, composer and music teacher…supporter of women's suffrage and pacifism; Kenneth Macleod, 1871-1955, often collaborated with Marjory Kennedy-Fraser, as her collector and Gaelic translator, for her three volumes of "The Songs of the Hebrides" (1909-21)…famous poet in both Gaelic and English; Nelson Sprackling, 1885-1950, excerpt from Alan Lomax September 1939 letter to Sprackling: "Captain Dick [Maitland]…was amazed at your ability to get the old tunes down correctly…If you locate other authentic shantey singers, I would appreciate your letting me know about them. (John A. Lomax and Alan Lomax papers, Library of Congresss, with at least two September 1939 handwritten letters in this collection from Sprackling to Lomax)…Sprackling was a New York City area music educator, researcher, historian, recorder, and archivist, he wrote the music for the book "The Tinmaker Man of New Amsterdam" –Music from an Old Tune Arranged by Nelson Sprackling, illustrations by Erick Berry, publisher Winston, 1941…there are December 6, 1935 copyrights for Sprackling for his music for "capstan chanteys" published by Carl Fisher, New York, in "Catalog of Copyright Entries: Music compositions, 1936"…Speckling is noted in the Preface of "Roll and Go, Songs of American Sailormen, Enlarged and Revised Edition", Norton, 1938, "Grateful acknowledgment is also made to Mr. Nelson Sprackling for his help in recording the songs sung by Captain Richard Maitland for the second edition."
