About This Item
Photographic Image. Very Good. Hardcover. (1966. --VIETNAM PHOTO ALBUM-- (66) PHOTOS of GIs in Vietnam, (20) LETTERS + ENVELOPES + some homemade PIN-UPS. (66) PHOTOs: American soldiers/ army bases & sites/ river boats/ Vietnamese kids & young women/ food markets & animals/ Kathy's head shot/+++++ Letters show life in the 1960s for young people in California, open relationships, guys who get drafted, Vietnam-- A story by working class kids from east of San Francisco. Richard and his buddy are drafted (Richard to Vietnam, his friend to Germany). A 3rd pal, Danny, undrafted, is home and putting moves on Richard's girl, Kathy. Things are getting messy-- Kathy's best friend, Anna, has a crush on Danny and jealously watches him drift towards Kathy, (Richard's girlfriend) -- Anna retaliates by putting moves on Richard via letters to him in Vietnam. Meanwhile Kathy, just turning 18, is overwhelmed with exams, a part-time waitressing job, health issues, bad haircuts/hair color, achy feet, moving the family trailer to a new site, and to top it off -- watching mom take to drink when her stepdad is found to be running around. Totally overwhelmed, Kathy threatens to move out if mom leaves stepdad. Oh, and Richardt writes of a Vietnamese "girlfriend" because a man needs it... Kathy is sympathetic to the girl because Richard will leave her when his tour in Vietnam ends-- and Kathy feels she and Richard will be back together when he returns..
