About This Item

Good+ condition with minor marks/thumbing, and early rusting to staples. Scarce, original programme for Sean O'Casey's "The Star Turns Red". London, 1940. Unity Theatre. 16 page stapled brochure including cast list and period advertisements (one of which advertises a Soviet Music performance on the 13th April, hence the programme pre-dates this).

An early programme from the original production of O'Casey's most overtly political play, premiered on March 20, 1940 by the Unity Theatre in London, an amateur left-wing company. Public performances (initially proposed to be at the Welwyn Drama Festival) were banned by the Lord Chamberlain in May 1940. The book was published that year by Macmillan in London, but the firm's New York office rejected the work due to its positive Communist themes. It was not produced in Ireland until 1978.
