About This Item
Softcover. Very good. Hand-made calendar composed of 12 sheets of 7" x 5.25" cardstock, two-hole punched at top for hanging. Small printed calendar page affixed to each sheet below an original cyanotype photograph measuring about 3.25" x 4.5" (sizes vary slightly). Most photos have a penciled caption written on the back of the card. Front page toned and has some rubbed spots, otherwise very good. Each page of this calendar shows a different view of the town of South Royalton, Massachusetts, with several labeled as "before fire" or "after fire." The fire, dubbed "The Great Fire of 1904" in local histories, occurred on October 25, 1904. It started in an outbuilding of the Whitney Woolen Mill Co. and ultimately destroyed a bridge, church, schoolhouse, grocery store, and several private homes. The calendar includes images of the Mill, "the new dam," village streets, "the old homestead" (presumably the home of the photographer), the railroad track and houses above it, and the bridge, church, and schoolhouse before and after the fire.
