Description:
London: Dent, 1912. Hardcover. Fine. Robinson, Charles. Large 8vo, full ivory cloth stamped in pictorial gilt, illustrated with 17 mounted full page color plates with captioned tissue guards and mounted color chapter head art by Charles Robinson. Top edge gilt. Mild toning to pictorial endpapers else a lovely bright copy with tiny bumps to tips, no previous ownership markings. Each plate is mounted with a gold border. Amongst an abundance of beautifully illustrated books of Robinson's, this stands out. The spine gilt with the full title and a large gnome is a delight; the cover, also all in gilt, is a delicate work with a princess and elaborate borders filled with more characters. The endpapers feature trolls with mining tools, all in gilt. The title page is again elaborately drawn. Vignettes are everywhere throughout the text. It's a charmer and one of our favorite Charles Robinson books.

LOUIS-RENÉ MADELAINE LA VASSOR, COMTE DE LA TOUCHE-TRÉVILLE (1745-1804). The Count De la Touche was a French admiral who served in the American and French Revolutions, as well as the Napoleonic Wars. LS. 2pgs. December 14, 1786. Paris. A letter signed “De la Touche”. In French, the Admiral De la Touche wrote to the Marquis de Lotbinière regarding a Naval volunteer. The letter dates to the period between the American and French Revolutions. In translation, it reads: “Even though I have the greatest desire, dear Marquis, to do what is possible to make M. Laudrier Desbordes happy, it is impossible for him to embark as 1st class volunteer if he does not have the required three actual years of service at sea. In case that he cannot fulfill that requirement, issued last January 1, he will qualify as 2nd class volunteer, to which the two campaigns that he has already participated in entitle him. You have inspired my infinite interest in him, dear Marquis, and I will be happy to provide support for…

Description:
Secretary of the navy under Lincoln and Johnson. ADS, 1p, 8" X 9½", n.p., 1848 August. Very good. Attractive pale blue lined sheet. Welles, at this time chief of the bureau of provisions and clothing for the U.S. Navy, requests a $150 advance for costs incurred in traveling from Washington to Auburn, New York, to attend the case of United States vs. L. Caldwell, as well as reimbursement for two past trips. Signed with his usual cramped "GWelles." This item is accompanied by an exceptional and scarce 8" X 10" glossy photograph, a full-length portrait (possibly from a Mathew Brady negative?) made circa 1950 by pioneering photography historian FREDERICK HILL MESERVE (1865-1962), "America's first great photograph collector" who assigned numbers to Lincoln photographs ("Meserve numbers") that are still used today. This striking image was quite likely made from the original glass plate negative, as was Meserve's habit. It is identified on the verso in pencil in Meserve's distinctive hand: "Gideon Welles /…
