William Paley was an 18th-century English apologist whose works were concerned defending Christianity and the existence of God. During the Revolutionary War, Paley's works were a source of Christian inspiration to Americans and offered advice on moral philosophy to politicians. In his book 'Evidences of Christianity', Paley discusses God's true existence, observations of miracles, proofs of the authenticity of scripture, and much more.

§ Likely William Lithgow Jr. (1750-1796), a major in the 11th Massachusetts during the American Revolutionary War. He was wounded during the Battle of Ticonderoga, which prompted him to resign. He was later appointed by George Washington to be the U.S. attorney for the district of Maine. He was also the son of William Lithgow (1715-1798), a justice of the peace and judge for the court of Common Pleas in Lincoln County.
