Gaius Suetonius Tranquilius was a Roman historian and biographer, whose most significant contribution was his biographies of 12 Roman rulers, from Julius Caesar to Domitian. Suetonius wrote The Twelve Caesars while serving as the personal secretary of the emperor Hadrian.

7 3/4 inches tall hardcover, full leather binding, spine with raised bands, gilt compartments and gilt title to spine, expertly rebacked with original spine conserved, 8vo. xx, [4], 390pp. Engraved title, portrait, 41 copper plate engravings (most folding) of male and female genitourinary system, digestive system, clyster apparatus, and syringe. Includes images of ectopic human pregnancy and surgical preparation of a dog for physiologic study of digestive tract. Surface wear to covers and spine, bookplate of physician previous owner to front paste-down, ink signature of original owner top of front endpaper (Francisci Joannis Desmares Bonneville), scattered wormholes (mostly marginal), binding tight, pages crisp and unmarked, plates with small tears at base of folds, overall very good minus, in custom archival mylar cover. Includes 3 Garrison-Morton titles (974, 1209, and 1210), text in Latin.
REGNIER DE GRAAF (1641 – 1673) was a Dutch physician and anatomist who made key discoveries in the biology of the reproductive and digestive tracts. He studied medicine in Utrecht and Leiden, submitted his doctoral thesis on the pancreas, and went to France where he obtained his medical degree from the University of Angers. After returning to the Netherlands, since he was a Catholic in a mainly Protestant country, he was unable to follow a university career. After the early death of a son, De Graaf died in 1673 at age 32. The mature stage of the ovarian follicle is called the Graafian follicle in his honor. De Graaf also described the anatomy of the testicles and collected secretions of the gall bladder and the pancreas (all illustrated in the plates).

FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. XXX; with attractive vignette on title; expert repair to corner of title and throughout (not affecting the text), otherwise a clean copy throughout; stitched as issued in contemporary, possibly original, stiff wraps, light rubbing to extremities, otherwise a very good copy.First and only edition of this anonymous satirical poem on the subject of snuff and tobacco, apparently by "a famous milanese author", whose identity we have been unable to ascertain, although Melzi does note a similar work, Il Cavalier del Dente, which appeared the previous year, and is attributed to Gaetano del Hoyo. The work sings the praises of snuff, by means of which the chaste nose will sniff out bliss, and includes a dedication "all ordine chiarissimo di tutte quante le tabacchiere".
Not in Melzi; OCLC records just one copy only, at the New York Public Library.

From the library of the Los Angeles Medical Association, with partially removed numbers at the tail of the spine, blind stamp to the title and page 49, pencilled library notes to the contents list, remnants of a bookplate to the front pastedown, and abraded spots on the rear pastedown where the the card pocket was removed. Cloth a little rubbed and marked with a small knock to the edge of the lower board and a scuff affecting the same board. Contents clean. A very good copy. First edition of this important book on the use of "twilight sleep" anaesthesia during labour by the female surgeon who first advocated its use in the United States.
