REGNIER DE GRAAF (1641 – 1673) was a Dutch physician and anatomist who made key discoveries in the biology of the reproductive and digestive tracts. He studied medicine in Utrecht and Leiden, submitted his doctoral thesis on the pancreas, and went to France where he obtained his medical degree from the University of Angers. After returning to the Netherlands, since he was a Catholic in a mainly Protestant country, he was unable to follow a university career. After the early death of a son, De Graaf died in 1673 at age 32. The mature stage of the ovarian follicle is called the Graafian follicle in his honor. De Graaf also described the anatomy of the testicles and collected secretions of the gall bladder and the pancreas (all illustrated in the plates).

Description:
Philadelphia: David McKay Co, 1932. The overall condition is very good. There is the slightest hint of wearing on the spine and corner of the cover. Binding is tight. The pages are discolored due to age, otherwise minimal damage.. In a darker story for Beatrix Potter, she retells the classic folk tale of Bluebeard. It is told from the perspective of Anne, the sister to the eighth wife of Bluebeard. 154 pages. 12 full page illustrations done by Katharine Sturges. First edition, first issue. The frontispiece illustration incorrectly tipped in opposite page 7, instead of the title page, as it was in later copies. It is one of the lesser known of Beatrix Potter's work, and is different from her famous stories, like Peter Rabbit, in both style and subject. Blue cloth binding, hardcover, with glint stamping on spine and front board. 7 3/4" x 5 1/4" Sister Anne was the last story written by Beatrix Potter and published while she was alive. It was only published in the United States.

London:: Printed for T. Cadell; and E. Moxon, 1834., 1834. 8vo. vii, 284 pp. Engravings throughout. Bound ca. 1890/1905 in full olive brown crushed morocco, gilt corner decorations, dentelles, a.e.g., marbled endleaves. Bookplates of Alfred Trapnell and Oscar Ehrhardt Lancaster (both owned fore-edge paintings). Very good. With a vertical fore-edge painting of a large urn or vase with a plant. The painting is not signed or dated. PROVENANCE: Alfred Trapnell bookplate, his library sold in NY ca. 1910 ["998" label]. The fore-edge was painted before Trapnell bought the book, as there was another ROGERS in the Phoebe Jane Easton collection that was a clear companion to this volume, also with Trapnell's bookplate. Alfred Trapnell was a famous collector of porcelains. [kmw]

London: John Russell Smith, 1865. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. Three volumes. 12mo. Half dark red cloth. Introduction and notes by Thomas Wright, The Introduction is of bibliographical importance as it sketches the history of the early editions of Malory: Caxton (one complete copy; one incomplete); de Worde (two editions, one copy of each known); Copland; East; and finally the edition of 1634. Each volume with the engraved circular bookplate of Emily Morris Gallatin on the front pastedowns. The simple signature of Arthur Lewis, 1949, on each of the front free endpapers. And on the front free endpaper of volume 1 a nearly full page inscription dated 2018. Only volume 1 has been fully opened; the remaining volumes are partially unopened. Aside from the inscription and signatures, these volumes are in very good condition showing only traces of wear at the corners, edges and spine tips. This is a curious edition. We have marked it a first edition, but not without hesitation. The first printing… Read More
