London,: George Allen & Unwen, Ltd.,, 1972. Third Edition, Seventh Impression.. THE HOBBIT, signed by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is the British publication, Third edition, seventh impression, 1972, measuring approximately 5-1/4 by 7-3/4. There is no need for me to chat you up on the significance of this title, if you're this far, you know what you're looking at. The Hobbit is very rarely found signed, in any edition. Signed upon the title-page by the author. The book also bears the previous owner's signature and inscription-"To James & Mary with great affection, Fred." There is a small correction in red ink in the listing of illustrations, correcting the mispelled, "ratelves," to "raftelves," by a very astute reader. The line Twelve illustrations by the author, four in colour. A very nice copy, no fading to the d.j., slight rub at upper tips. A small moisture stain that you can see in the scans, just about a 1/2" by 1/4" moisture stain, at signature-and-a half of the page edges I have been a collector since 1970, and a dealer specializing in Fantasy & Science Fiction since 1976. This is from my own personal collection, and I have never personally, encountered another signed HOBBIT. And before you ask: it's time my wife retired, she has worked too long and too hard to help support the family. Bookselling is a gentlemanly persuit. FREE DOMESTIC SHIPPING, but international shipping and insurance to be paid by buyer. Provenance provided to purchaser.
