John Cage, the avant-garde composer and a founder of the New York School, arrived in 1967 for a three-year appointment as Associate of the Center for Advanced Studies and Visiting Professor of Music, where he created numerous “happenings,” performance art where visitors, performers, objects, and environments interacted. The first happening Cage directed at Illinois (complete with large weather balloons) occurred on this November weekend: Music Circus (otherwise known as Musicircus) at the University of Illinois Stock Pavillion, which began at 8pm and lasted for nearly eight hours. Description:
New York: Rand McNally & Co. , 1949. RARE lithograph wall chart for the device called the "Structural Differential" which Alfred Korzybski patented in 1925 as a means to aid in visualizing the process he called "abstracting". This was to be used as a training device in general semantics, a field of study Korzybski is credited with founding. The chart is Near Fine, rubbed lower right, mounted on two stained wooden dowels with ribbon hanger 18" wide by 38" high. Korzybski's work in semantics heavily influenced science fiction authors such as A.E. Van Vogt, Robert A. Heinlein, Poul Anderson, and H. Beam Piper, as well as L. Ron Hubbard and Joseph W. Campbell. His most famous quote "The map is not the territory" comes from this longer quote "A map is not the territory it represents, but, if correct, it has a similar structure to the territory, which accounts for its usefulness."( Science and Sanity, Korzybski, 1931). This uprising was the first of a series of uprisings across China and by the end of 1911 there was really no doubt that the Qing Dynasty would fall. On February 12th, 1912 Empress Dowager Longyu formally abdicated the throne on behalf of Puyi. The publisher of this poster,… Read More

N.P.: N.I., N.D. [1979?]. Offset lithograph poster. [27¾ x 21 inches]. Wear to edges, pinholes on corners, Very Good. The photograph is the work of Susan Meiselas, credited on the poster. "Ocultando su identidad detras de su mascaras tradicionales, nativos del rebelde barrio Monimbo de en Masaya, preparan bombas de contacto para combatir el ejercito de la Dictadura, durante la Guerra de Liberacion." (Foto de Susan Meiselas) Rough translation: Nicaragua a country that discovers itself: Inturismo. Hiding their identity behind their traditional masks, natives of the rebel Monimbo neighborhood in Masaya, prepare contact bombs to combat the army of the Dictatorship, during the War of Liberation." Appears at first glance to be a tourism poster, but is seemingly an ironic parody of such. One of a series wryly praising colonial architecture and other similarly inappropriate national artifacts. Meiselas's image appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine on June 30, 1978 as seen here, and is… Read More

Description:
Stockholm: Svensk Filma, 1987. No Binding. Fine. A quite sensational item of movie memorabilia! A cinema poster or flyer for the 1980's re-screening in Stockholm, Sweden, of Ingmar Bergman's 1949 movie "Törst" (The Thirst). The poster has been inscribed, signed and dated by Ingmar Bergman. Professionally framed by the original recipient and is under glass. The actual poster or flyer is presumably a reproduction of the original poster for the re-screening event. The frame measures approximately 16" x 12.25" and the poster will, thus, be very slightly smaller. To the verso of the frame there is a printed sticker from the framers stating (in Swedish) - "The artwork is insulated with cardboard. 100% cotton" (Google translate). I interpret this to mean that it is cotton-backed. The inscription is located below the final titles and is in blue ink. It reads, "Till TAPANI, MED HJÄRTLIG HÄLSNING OCH TACK FRÄN INGMAR BERGMAN, 10.3.87" (To… Read More

Description:
[Berkeley]: [People's Park Negotiating Committee and others], 1969. Very good +. 21 leaflets or handbills, mimeographed or offset printed on variously-colored stocks, and all measuring 8.5" x 11". Condition varies, with occasional toning or flattened folds, but mostly very good or better. Two examples printed on yellow paper show more wear, having obviously spent some time on a telephone pole, with some insect damage and corner tears, but still generally complete. A rich collection of hastily produced leaflets, most of which date to May and June, 1969 (a few are as late as September). The area in question, People's Park, had been just recently opened, and was owned by UC-Berkeley. The university quickly developed plans to convert the land into a sports facility, though the space had already become a haven for campus radicals and free speech activists, following the tradition of Mario Savio and the Free Speech Movement just half a decade earlier on the same campus. As the students began to dig their… Read More
