Atlantic Monthly / Little Brown, 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Signed and inscribed by Man Ray with an original drawing of his trademark floating eye and face. This copy is inscribed on the half title to Frank Goodman, 'one of the last of the old-time Broadway press agents, a star handler and headline hustler' (New York Times). The drawing and inscription are on the half title. The inscription, which is bordered by and incorporates the drawing, reads 'For Mr. Frank Goodman Man Ray April 2, 1963'. The floating eye is above Ray's signature, and the nose and mouth extend beneath the inscription. Signed on plate (plate signed) and hand numbered out of 1500. Limitation page in French and English. This set is No. 1477/1500.
"The series was printed using the original plates for the portfolio LA MELODIE ACIDE, published in January 1980....The present edition consists of 1,500 prints on Arches paper of the 14 original plates, numbered from 1/1,500 to 1,500/1,500, and with the artist's signature on each of the plates."
This set is INCOMPLETE with 12 of the 14 plates. Plates measure 13 x 10 inches and are in excellent condition. Exterior paperboard portfolio is heavily torn at the flap and lightly soiled overall.

Tampere, Finland: Tampere Art Museum, 1986. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Near Fine. First Printing. An incredibly rare item of Moomins memorabilia. In 1986 Tove Jansson and her life-partner, the artist Tuulikki Pietilä, donated a huge collection of Moomins-related artwork to Tampere Art Museum, Finland. The collection comprised over 1000 drawings and paintings and 38 three-dimensional tableaux. The collection was first displayed in The Moomins exhibition at Tampere Art Museum along with other original sketches and book illustrations by Jansson. The tableaux were miniature Moomin-themed dioramas crafted by Jansson, Tuulikki Pietilä and their friend, Pentti Eistola. The donation also comprised other works of art by Jansson as well as archival Moomins-related material. An exhibition catalogue was, of course, published to mark the occasion and we are pleased to be able to offer for sale a particularly significant example. Superb set of the first six volumes (of 12) of Friedrich Bertuch's famous Picture-book for Children, an illustrated encyclopedia for children.
Volumes 1 and 2 in half leather, volumes 3 to 6 in original paper wraps.
With all 600 hand-coloured copperplates in near fine condition with superb hand colour.
Text in German and French.
The Picture-Book was published in 12 volumes from 1790 to 1843 and eventually included 1,185 handcoloured copperplates. Bertuch wished to reproduce the magic of discovery, and mixed engravings of plants, animals, shells, minerals, volcanoes and technical inventions in a utopian chaos, so that a child could encounter afresh the wonders of the natural world at the turn of every page.
Although unsigned, the copperplates were overseen by Georg Melchior Kraus and J.H. Lips, after drawings by Th. Götz, C. Graf, C. Horny, Fr. Kaiser, and W. A fascinating collection of European fashion plates including pretty servant girls, milkmaids, cooks, chambermaids and fisherwomen, ladies and peasants, fruit sellers and florists. Many in bonnets and aprons, carrying baskets and other tools of their trades, many dressed in their finest clothes or festival costumes.
