Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1950. First Edition. First Edition. Doubly inscribed to legendary genre fiction editor and enthusiast Anthony Boucher. The first inscription, at the front endpaper, reads: "To the Bouchers / with affection / Kenneth Millar / (see Dedication ->)." The second inscription is at the Dedication page, which reads TO TONY, and very cleverly makes use of both Millar's real name and pseudonym, as well as Boucher's: "For Tony and Bill, / Those remarkable men, / This grist from the mill / of Johnny and Ken." Boucher was a legendary figure in the mystery and science fiction world, and is considered to be one of the great proponents of genre fiction as a literary form. The worldwide mystery conference Bouchercon is named for him. A key Macdonald title and the second Lew Archer novel, basis for the 1975 film, the second of two Lew Archer adaptations featuring Paul Newman in the lead role (renamed as "Harper"). A unique and important copy. Near Fine in a bright, Near Fine dust jacket.

London: George G Harrap and Co, 1923. First Edition. Large quarto. First Edition. Issued by Harrap in an edition of 2000 copies in 1923, 250 of which were distributed by Stokes in the US. With 48 richly colored plates interspersed with sheets of calligraphic text. Housed in a custom maroon quarter-leather clamshell case, with marbled paper-covered boards, gilt spine lettering and design. William Timlin was an artist and author, born in the UK. He studied at the Armstrong College of Art in Newcastle, and moved to South Africa in 1912 with his parents to finish his education. He worked there both as an architect and as an artist, and freely credits the influences of Aubrey Beardsley, Edmund Dulac, and Arthur Rackham in his work. He wrote and illustrated this novel, which also sports his own calligraphy. The story is a combination of science fiction and children's fantasy, wherein a man who believes in fairies has used their skill to construct a ship to travel into space and on to Mars, where they… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1976. Archive of six autograph letters signed and one typed letter signed from Kathy Acker to fellow experimental novelist Rudolph Wurlitzer, twenty five pages total, undated, but written during the first half of 1976 based on dates mentioned in the body of one of the letters. From the collection of Rudolph Wurlitzer, with provenance. Acker and Wurlitzer were in a relationship, begun while they were both in New York, and continuing briefly after he left the city for Nova Scotia, where he was a the time of this correspondence. Two of the letters directly address their relationship, and correspond to letters written by Wurlitzer as quoted in Chris Kraus' 2017 biography of the late writer, "After Kathy Acker." The letters offered here were not available to Kraus, something she mentions when discussing the relationship with Wurlitzer, and have never been published or previously available for sale. In addition to Acker's frank discussion of her feelings toward Wurlitzer, the letters take a… Read More

Description:
New York: Modern Age, 1942. First Edition. First Edition of the author's first book, one of three hardcover titles he produced before moving to paperback originals. Review Copy, with publisher's typescript review slip laid in. The only review copy we have ever seen, and only the third jacketed copy. Modern Age was a short-lived entity, very nearly a vanity press, and copies of any of their books have always verged on unattainability. Near Fine in a Near Fine, lightly spine-faded dust jacket. Description:
New York: Lenox Hill Press, 1971. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED playfully by the author on the verso of the half-title page: "To Mark Reinsberg / the hombre from the capital of incontinence-that is, existentially / My best regards for authoritarianism. / Chas. Willeford / 19 Nov '71." After an early career in paperback originals, Willeford's second hardcover publication after "The Burnt Orange Heresy," a Western with all the philosophical musing, genre-convention busting, and pitch black humor one comes to expect from the great writer's writer. Republished by Dennis McMillan in 1999 under Willeford's original title, "The Difference." Very Good plus in a Very Good plus dust jacket. Faint foxing to the page edges and endpapers, with some wear to the cloth of the top edge of the boards. Jacket faintly foxed on the rear panel and flaps, with a lightly faded spine and brief wear to the extremities.

N.p.: N.p., 1990. Archive of original material belonging to mystery and crime author Gerald A. Browne, consisting of 19 typed manuscripts, 13 handwritten manuscripts, 8 corrected galleys, 3 screenplays, and extensive handwritten, typed, and xerographically duplicated materials pertaining to all novels in the author's oeuvre. Browne was born and raised in Litchfield County, Connecticut. He attended the University of Mexico, the Sorbonne, and Columbia University. "It's All Zoo," his debut novel, was written while Browne was living in Paris and working as a fashion photographer. The novel's success heralded a twenty-year career as a bestselling author, until his retirement in the late 1990s. His works were adapted twice for film: "11 Harrowhouse" (1974), directed by Aram Avakian and starring Charles Grodin, James Mason, and Candice Bergen, and "Green Ice" (1981), directed by Ernest Day and starring Ryan O'Neal, Anne Archer, and Omar Sharif. Both films follow jewel heists, a common theme in many of… Read More

Description:
New York: Columbia Records, 1991. Original matte finish photograph of Bob Dylan by photographer Don Hunstein, shot circa 1960, struck for the first time in 1991 for use as shooting artwork on the cover of the 1991 box set. To our knowledge, the only print struck from the negative. The image of Dylan in the photograph on offer extends substantially beyond what can be seen on the cover of the box set release. Single production annotation, in manuscript pencil, on lower right corner of the mat. Full provenance available. Don Hunstein is perhaps best known for his photograph of Bob Dylan and Suze Rotolo walking in Greenwich Village, used for the cover of the 1963 album "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan." "The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3" was the first installment in the Dylan bootleg series, a long-term project covering his vast output from 1961 to 1989. The series has become a massive critical and popular success, and as of 2021-20 years later-14 sets have been released, covering Dylan's career from its… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1970. Substantial archive of material belonging to Austrian-American stage hypnotist and magician John Kolisch, including two three-ring card binders with typescript and manuscript notes for Kolisch's live shows, and 271 vintage photographs of Kolisch in performance. Archive appears to date from the 1950s through the 1970s, the heyday of Kolisch's career. One binder holds notes and scripts for Kolisch's magic tricks, powers of suggestion, and general show patter and jokes, while the other binder focuses primarily on feats of hypnosis. The binders hold a variety of material relating to Kolisch's performances, a mix of more formal typed scripts for routines alongside manuscript draft notes and annotations noting potential "ad-libbed" interjections. Several pages capture Kolisch recording his ideas for changes to the pacing and setup of his shows, as well as reminders about modernizing his patter and updating his celebrity references. Although the bulk of Kolisch's material is undated,… Read More
