New York, New York: Duffield & Company. Very Good with no Dust Jacket. 1909. First US Edition: First Printing. Hard Cover. 310 pages: 5.5 x 7.5 in.: 1.2: KB#009960: First US Edition, which followed the First UK Edition and a First Colonial Edition, both published in 1908. Boards now protected by a new Brodart Archival Mylar Cover. Original Slate Blue cloth boards with orange lettering on spine and front board (bright colors on front but somewhat faded on spine) and green twin cobra snakes intertwined embossing on front board. Pages are clean, unmarked, bright, tightly bound and sharp cornered. Board and spine corners are slightly rubbed. Scarce, Out Of Print, Book. The novel inspired a film of the same name directed in 1926 by Rex Ingram. "Set in Bohemian Paris at the turn of the 20th century, this sinister novel was inspired by the notorious black magician, Aleister Crowley, and portrays Parisian cafe society." .

Synopsis

W. Somerset Maugham was born in Paris in 1874. He began to study medicine in London but quit to focus exclusively on writing. In 1926 he bought a house in Cap Ferrat, France, which was to become a meeting place for a number of writers, artists and politicians. He died in 1965.
