Description:
Paris: Editions Roger DaCosta. 1972. Facsimile edition of Bidloo's noted atlas of human anatomy first published in Amsterdam in 1685. Large 4to (11"x16"), bound in bu rgundy leatherette, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. No. 411 of 2000 copies printed. A bit of rubbing at top and bottom of sp ine, otherwise fine. The atlas is illustrated with 105 plates by Gerard de Lairesse, showing the human figure both in living at titudes and as dissected cadavers. The book was later plagiarized by English surgeon William Cowper for his Anatomy of the Humane Bodies (1698), which gave no credit to either Bidloo or de Laires se. This led to a number of vitriolic exchanges between Bidloo an d Cowper, including several pamphlets published in each anatomist 's defense. William III, Dutch stadholder and king of England, asked Bidloo to become his personal physician in 1695. The king died in his arms on 8 March 1702. .

Description:
1972. Original unpublished and unproduced screenplay about revolt on an American Slave ship [the Fair Angelica] navigating the middle pa ssage, circa 1835. A very unusual subject for Matthiessen. Fair Angelica is a first draft, typed carbon, 123 loose leaves -- an agency copy used to solicit producers and investors -- one of whom was the progressive filmmaker Martin Ritt. Black Cargoes is a revised and retitled draft, 112 pp. in black studio 2 -post covers. Mostly mimeographed, but with a dozen typed and corrected pages interleaved; numerous holographic additions or changes throughout by Matthiessen. The change in title may have been to capture investor interest; there was popular work of non-fiction several years prior [Black Cargoes - A History of the Atlantic Slave Trade by Daniel Mannix and Malcom Cowley.] However this treatment by PM is a work of fiction and unrelated to the earlier book. This screenplay is not mentioned in any bibliographic works about PM. The only other known copy is in… Read More

Description:
[Black Fury] Archive of film-related correspondence by Sacco-Vanzetti/Nuremberg Justice Michael A. Musmanno
A remarkable archive of nearly 41 original letters from noted judge/author/screenwriter Michael A. Musmanno concerning the 1935 Warner Brothers film "Black Fury" starring Paul Muni. The letters are written to his ghostwriter/script doctor/amanuensis Bruce Lockwood. With another five letters from Lockwood to Musmanno.
The film was based on an actual 1929 incident in which John Barkoski, a miner agitating for recognition of the United Mine Workers of America, was beaten to death by company police. His killing and the subsequent acquittal of his murderers provoked public indignation and eventually led to the end of Pennsylvania's private anti-labor Coal and Iron Police system. The New York Times called the film "a notable experiment in social drama" masterfully acted by Muni. The film was controversial, with the National Coal Association attempting to stop production through political pressure… Read More

"Our soldiers in the field will look with great anxiety at the endorsement which their friends give at the ballot box, when I and confident Iowa will heartily respond favorably to their cause. /// Hoping that you will cast a united vote for the Union ticket and thereby convince the rebels that we of Iowa stand firmly in favor of our cause and country."

1940 MGM file copy of the original screenplay (Paramount, 1931), used for the 1941 direct remake of the film. Written by Percy Heath and Samuel Hoffenstein adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel.
"Second White Script" dated August 7, 1931 [and dated again March 8, 1940 when the script was copied by MGM for the film's remake with Spencer Tracy.] 8.5x11", pale blue studio covers fastened with two brad posts. Stamped Vault Copy/File Copy, with partially peeled studio label at top. 169 mimeographed pages.
The 1931 film was nominated for three academy awards, with Frederic March winning best actor. The film was made prior to the full enforcement of the Production and is remembered today for its strong sexual content. When MGM remade the film 10 years later with Spencer Tracy, the studio bought the negative and the rights to the earlier film; every print that could be located was recalled and destroyed, and for decades, the film was believed lost. A print was rediscovered in 1967. Unknown… Read More
