Handwritten letter, Gosport, November 9th 1818. 23cm x 33.5cm. 2pp. Folded: 23cm x 18.5cm + 23cm x 15cm, with address and wax seal to verso. Short closed tear to fold. Corners creased. To Dr Patrick Kelly, Finsbury Square, London. Regarding the death on October 28th of Thomas Simpson Evans LLD FLS (1777-1818) aged 41, Mathematician, formerly Assistant Astronomer Royal to Dr Maskelyne. 'His library was considered one of the most valuable collections of mathematical and philosophical works in the kingdom.' ODNB

Dr. William Burney (1762 – 1832) Burney's Academy for the Education of Young Gentlemen Destined for the Navy, Army, and the East India Company's Service was founded in 1791. It would later become the Royal Naval Academy, under the patronage of William IV, Queen Victoria, and King Edward VII, educating members of the royal family through the 19th century. Author of 'The naval heroes of Great Britain', 1806; 'The British Neptune: or, a history of the achievements of the Royal Navy, from the earliest periods to the present time', 1807; and the invaluable reference work 'A New Universal Dictionary of the Marine', 1815, 1830.

Patrick Kelly LL.D. (1756–1842) Mathematician, Metrologist, author, astronomer, friend of Neville Maskelyne and John Herschel. For many years he was master of the Mercantile School, in Finsbury Square, London.
