Description
C.C. Beall (1892-1967) was a commercial illustrator who drew comics and book covers. He based the image on this World War II war loan poster on the famous Joe Rosenthal photograph of the second American flag to be raised on Iwo Jima. The photo made a huge impact after being published as part of news reports on the battle. This poster was part of the campaign for a 7th War Loan subscription, which took place in May 1945, just days after victory in Europe. Officials were concerned that the defeat of Germany might lessen bond sales. The slogan on the poster, "Now—all together," and the Iwo Jima image were meant to appeal to the spirit of collective patriotism and bolster bond sales. This is an authentic WWII era poster. It is not a reprint. The poster reads, "Fire Away!" "In Memory U.S.S. Dorado" "Buy Extra War Bonds". The image is of U.S. Navy sailors on board the U.S.S. Dorado. The searchlight on the ship is shining a yellow light across the poster with the phrase "Fire Away" written inside. There is a Victory V and the graphic for the 5th War Loan on the bottom left side of the poster. The very bottom of the poster says "U.S. Government Printing Office: 1944-O-581636" in the center. The poster measures 28" x 20" and is still in fair-good condition. Has artist signature of George Schreiber.
