Description:
Berlin: Trowitsch & Son, 1924. Hardcover. g. 4to. 100pp. Black cloth with gold lettering to cover. "Vanity of Vanities, sayeth the Lecturer, Vanity of Vanities, all is Vanity." One of the 24 books of the Hebrew Bible, this work is ascribed to King Solomon. It consists of personal matter with reflections on the meaning of life and the best way of life. The work emphatically proclaims all the actions of man to be inherently "futile" and/or "meaningless," as the lives of both wise and foolish men end in death. While the teacher clearly promotes wisdom for the enjoyment of an earthly life, he is unable to ascribe eternal meaning to it. In light of this perceived senselessness, the teacher suggests that one should enjoy the simple pleasures of daily life, such as eating, drinking, and taking enjoyment in one's wife and work, which are gifts from the hand of God. Minor scuffing, rubbing to boards and spine, with 1" tear to top of spine. Corners bumped and worn. Part of free front endpaper missing. In… Read More

Total edition of 265 with 136 on ivory laid paper Magnani de Pescia, 124 on white velin d'arches and 5 on Japan Hosho. Ecclesiastes is part of the Wisdom literature of the Christian Old Testament, composed by an unknown author (believed to be Solomon). It contains thoughts of which many have become proverbs: "Vanity of vanities! All is futile!" Ecclesiastes is a transliteration of the Greek Ekklesiastes, deriving from ekklesia (assembly). Ecclesiastes is presented as the biography or the journey of "Kohelet," being referred to in the third person by the narrator, towards understanding of life. The literary form is taken from the Middle Eastern tradition of fictional autobiography and considered "wisdom literature," a popular genre in the ancient world. Text in Italian. Spine of chemise lightly sunned.… Read More

Amsterdam: Henricus Wetstein, 1697. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Octavo. [8], 115 [i.e., 127], [1, blank]pp. Title in red and black. Contemporary half-calf over speckled boards, gilt-tooled spine with raised bands, morocco lettering piece; marbled endpapers. Tiny worm-trace at corners of last ten leaves, else a fine, crisp copy. Collation: [asterisk]4, A-G8, H4, I4 (= 68 leaves). First Edition of the author's last work, which was in fact ghostwritten by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716). The itinerant teacher, alchemist and writer Francisciscus Mercurius Van Helmont (1614-1698) "served as the link between the Kabbalah and the Cambridge Platonists led by Henry More and Ralph Cudworth, who made use of kabbalistic motifs for their own original speculative purposes" (Enc. Jud. 10:646). His deep interest in Jewish mystical doctrines is reflected in van Helmont's collaboration with Christian Knorr von Rosenroth in the publication of the Kabbala Denudata (1677, 1684). Paris: Astra, 1922. First edition. Softcover. g- to vg. Quarto. 128pp. Original illustrated wrappers. Illustrated with 14 full-page b/w illustrations (including front cover) by Marcel Vertès, this work is an early testimony of the persecution of the Jews in post-WWI Hungary. All but one of these images were first published the previous year in the scarce illustrated work by Vertes, 'Rajzai a Maygar Pokobol' (Vienna, 1921). After November 1918, with the defeat and dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hungary would be forced by the Allies to adhere to the Treaty of Trianon, which ceded to neighboring nations fully two-thirds of Hungary's imperial territory and two thirds of its population, including a third of its ethnically Magyar citizens and many Jews. These losses provoked deep anger and hostility in the remaining Hungarian population. The first post-war government was led by Mihály Károlyi, and was the first modern effort at liberal democratic government in Hungary. But it was cut… Read More

Madrid: Cedesa, 1959. First edition. Softcover. g- to vg-. Octavo. 129pp. [1]. Black, white and red red dust jacket illustrated with photo-collage, with red lettering. Tan stiff paper wrappers with red lettering on the front cover. This work of right-wing anti-socialist propaganda, was published for a French readership, at the time when Spain was still in the grips of the Franco Dictatorship. The text throughout is a mixture of reproductions of extracts from various books and periodicals in English, combined with text commentary in French. Includes numerous b/w photographic reproductions throughout. Although no author or editor is credited, it is possible that the work was produced by Luis González de Linares (1904-1997), whose business card can be found laid in at the interior front cover. Apparently this is the case with many other known copies of the book, which implies it was given to various significant French individuals as propaganda by Linares. At the time the Spanish writer and journalist… Read More
