1825. Haarlem, Wed. A. Loosjes Pz., 1825. Titlepage, v, 46 pp. A good uncut copy with large margins in a modern cloth binding. One of the many pamphlets written in the nineteenth century about the controversy of who was the inventor of printing, Koster or Gutenberg.

(some waterstaining at the top corners, not affecting text). Nineteenth century hcloth, marbled boards. This collection consists of 144 items. The introduction says: "Les amateurs n'ignorent pas le goût que a toujours dirigé M. Van Puten dans son choix; ils savent qu'il n'admettait dans son Cabinet que les objets les plus rares et les plus beaux..."

1802. La présente Notice se distribue à Paris chez Franç. Léand. Regnault... Thierry... Silvestre... An X (1802.). 16pp. Nineteenth century hcloth, marbled boards. 150 items described. No information is given about owners. Apparently it was a catalogue made in great haste as the introduction says that: "le peu de temps que nous avons eu pour mettre en ordre cette Collection, ne nous ayant pas permis d'entrer dans de grands détails..."

1832. Dijon, de l'imprimerie de Frantin, 1832. 56pp. Nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards. (more or less foxing throughout the text). One of 100 copies only. From the introduction: "Il m'est tombé sous la main un objet assez curieux... Cet objet consiste en vingt-deux grandes miniatures, ou tableaux en couleur, relatifs à la fondation du superbe Hôpital du Saint-Esprit à Rome en 1198, et à la fondation de l'Hôpital du même ordre à Dijon en 1204. Ces miniatures... sont toutes réunies en tête d'un manuscrit sur vélin, format in-folio renfermant beaucoup de bulles de différens [sic] papes, relatives aux Hôpitaux. Ce recueil précieux existe aux archives de l'Hôpital de Dijon"

1837. Paris, imprimerie Crapelet, 1837. 95 pp. 363 items described. Wrappers. The first 21 pages of the present catalogue contain a notice on Spanish painting. Don Alejandro María Aguado y Ramírez de Estenoz, 1st Marquis de Las Marismas del Guadalquivir (Seville, June 29, 1784 Gijon, April 14, 1842), Spanish banker, was born of Old Christian parentage, originally from La Rioja, at Seville. He began life as a soldier, fighting with distinction in the Spanish War of Independence first against French, then on the side of Joseph Bonaparte. After the Battle of Baylen (1808) he entered the French army, in which he rose to be colonel and aide-de-camp to Marshal Soult. He was exiled in 1815, and immediately started business as a commission-agent in Paris, where, chiefly through his family connections in Havana and Mexico, he acquired in a few years enough wealth to enable him to undertake banking. Genest de Neslu, Commissaire-Priseur... Regnault, Peintre et Graveur... 1808. 10pp. 72 items. Charming woodcut of cherubs looking at a painting at the beginning of the catalogue. 19th century blue half cloth binding, blue paper boards. This sale was anonymous but some copies (including an earlier copy that I owned) mention that this is the collection "Lami, bookseller". This must be Pierre-Michel Lamy (17.. - 18..) who went bankrupt in 1808 but seemed to be in business again from 1812 onwards. According to a copy annotated by Regnault-Delalande the total amount of the sale was 1365,55 francs.

1867. Paris, 1867. 3pp. Only this one item described. Nineteenth century brown half morocco, marbled boards. Original printed wrappers bound-in. The painting that is sold here and attributed to Raphaël is a portrait of a young woman in profile on wood. The price is given in pencil in the margin.

1837. Paris, 1837. 13pp. 58 items described. 19th century half dark blue morocco, marbled boards. Priced throughout in a contemporary hand and gives the names of all buyers. From the preface: "Le choix de dessins quie nous allons décrire a été formé par un de ces amateurs connus par la justesse de ses connaissances et par le goût exquis de ses choix. Aussi nous pouvons certifier que tous les ouvrages que nous annonçons sont bien désignés sous les véritables noms des artistes qui les ont produits...".

A lovely copy of the regular edition.Illustrated with 48 text illustrations in colour and 16 vignettes by Louis Morin (after his watercolour designs).

Paris, J. Sevin, n.d. (1893). Oblong (11 x 27 cm). 12 plates, printed on the recto only. Printed wrapprs with staples. (staples a bit rusted, wrappers a bit damaged and waterstained but interior fine). The printed cover serves as a titlepage. A very scarce late nineteenth century lettering book for the use of painters, architects etc. On the inside front cover the publisher explains that this booklet distinguished itself from other by the simplicity of the letters used as examples. Most of the plates attribute the letters used to Deberny & Cie. I have only found one library holding this (BNF) who date it 1893.

The author is named in the privilege at the end of the work. Pierre Morin (the younger or the third) was a gardener who was active in Paris between 1650 and 1690. He was the youngest of three brothers (Pierre - the elder, René and our Pierre - the younger). They inherit their taste for plants and flowers from their father. According to Wikipedia John Evelyn visits Morin's garden (father) in the Marais in Paris in 1644 and describes it: "The next morning, I was had by a friend to the garden of Monsieur Morine, who, from being an ordinary gardener, is become one of the most skilful and curious persons in France for his rare collection of shells, flowers, and insects. The lower half consists of an undated handwritten invoice. No date, but circa 1780. Small corner damaged at the lower right hand corner and a tiny piece of paper missing just above the woodcut. But a good copy.

1731. Nouvelle édition, revue, corrigé & augmentée. Utrecht, Jean Broedelet, 1731-1741. 19 parts bound in 10 volumes. Original half mottled calf, speckled boards (some rubbed). Titles in red and black with a woodcut printer's mark. Each volume has a frontispiece (all identical) but volumes II lacks the frontispiece; volume VIII lacks the titlepage and frontispiece and volume XIV lacks the frontispiece. Some browning. Louis Elies Du Pin (1658 - 1719) was a French ecclesiastical historian. In his 'Nouvelle Bibliothèque' he treated simultaneously biography, literary criticism, and the history of dogma; in this he was a pioneer leaving far behind him all previous efforts, Catholic or Protestant, which were still under the influence of the Scholastic method. He was also the first to publish such a collection in a modern language. His work was fiercely criticized.

Lisboa, (Na officina de Antonio Gomes), 1794. 25 pages letterpress text and 25 engraved plates (including the allegorical frontispiece of Lisbon after a design by Jeronymo de Barros-Ferreira, and engraved second titlepage). Engraved armorial device on letterpress title, 1 engraved figure and 13 wood-engraved initials in the lettepress part showing architectural motifs. Oblong folio. Contemporary full calf (slightly rubbed and some damage to bottom of spine). Some light ink stains and two bits of paper missing from the margin without touching the engravings. A good copy of a beautiful work.Aroujo was a Portuguese calligrapher and a Professor of Writing and Arithmetic as is stated on the titlepage. He also was a Correspondent of the Imperial Academy of Science in St. Petersburg. The plates are dated from 1783 to 1790.
