Kiev: NP, 1903. First edition. Hardcover. vg. Folio. Size approx. 28 x 20 inches (50 x 70 cm). Rare micrographic portrait of Maxim Gorky composed from the letters of his short story Malva. The portrait was engraved by S. B. Khazin based on a photograph of the famous Russian author taken in Nizhny Novgorod by the Russian photographer Maxim Petrovich Dmitriev and printed by S. V. Kul'zhenko. Portrait passed by the censor in Kiev, 23 February 1903. The technique of portraiture using words and letters first appears in Russia in 1900 with Khazin's portrait of Count Leo Tolstoy which used 4700 characters to form the work. His second portrait in this style was the present work, that of Gorky, which used the approximately 82,000 characters of the story to form the hair, clothing, and chair on which Gorky is sitting. This scarce publication was printed in the occasion of the 80th birthday of prominent French-Jewish scholar Joseph Derenbourg (1811-1895), by the society of which he was a prominent member. The text throughout, written by esteemed Jewish scholars Rabbi Zadoc Kahn (1839-1905) and Rabbi Isidore Loeb (1839 - 1892) honors Derenbourg's contributions to the Société des études juives (Society for Jewish Studies), and his work in the field of Jewish scholarship. Quarto. 14, [2]pp. On October 15, 1944, the Fascist and anti-Semite Nyilas (Arrow Cross) took power in Hungary, with the 'Nation Leader' Ferenc Szálasi as Prime Minister, and Gábor Vajna as Interior Minister. One of their first acts was to reconsider the list of the Jewish people who were exempted by the previous governments from the enacted laws against the Jews (Jews married to non-Jews, or on whom higher military distinctions were conferred in the World War). This signed printed document is thus a new revised (and dramatically downsized) list of less than 600 Jews exempted from the Hungarian anti-Jewish laws. Its last page bears the original signature in ink of Interior Minister Gábor Vajna*, and the stamped seal of his ministry. This seventeenth century work of Jewish apologetics makes the case for Jewish tolerance on secular grounds in the sense that the presence of Jews is ultimately beneficial to the economy of the host country. Along with Menasseh Ben Israel's similar plea for tolerance, this work stands as an important step in the evolution of Jewish-Christian relations. "Mañanas en Mexico" (Mornings in Mexico) is a collection of travel essays by David Herbert Richards Lawrence, first published by Martin Secker in 1927. This work displays Lawrence's gifts as a travel writer, catching the 'spirit of place' in his own vivid manner. Lawrence wrote the first four of these essays at the same time as he was completing and revising his Mexican novel, "The Plumed Serpent." Three of the others, about Pueblo Indians, were written earlier in 1924 in New Mexico, and the final piece "A Little Moonshine with Lemon" came later as Lawrence remembered his New Mexico ranch (Kiowa Ranch) from Italy.
