A colourful poster published in the beginning of the seventies by the 'Association Choisir'.On April 5, 1971, in France, 343 filmmakers, writers, actresses, singers and philosophers ended a long-held silence. "One million women have abortions each year in France," they wrote in a manifesto published in the magazine Nouvel Observateur. "I declare that I am one of them. I declare that I've had an abortion. We demand open access to contraceptives; we demand open abortion." Written with the help of star intellectual Simone de Beauvoir and signed by celebrities ranging from Catherine Deneuve to Françoise Sagan, the text circulated quickly throughout the country. (Paris, c. 1845). Large broadside (49 x 63 cm). (with some traces of folds).Exotic wood was use for architectural ornaments but was deemed to be far to expensive for general use. J. Morisot invented a cheaper alternative for this and was rewarded a bronze medal for his invention. The broadsheet shows the available models and their prices.

Bruxelles, Librairie des Arts du Bâtiment F. Salmain et Fils, n.d. (1937). (size c. 37 x 27,5 cm). One page with a pricelist plus 52 plates held in portfolio (some browning around the edges). Halfcloth, boards with title illustration pasted on it. This portfolio contains 26 designs for modernist houses, each illustrated with two plates: the facade and a plan. The building prices can be found on the price-list that is laid in the front of the work. Rejecting ornament and embracing minimalism, Modernism became the single most important new style or philosophy of architecture and design of the 20th century. It was associated with an analytical approach to the function of buildings, a strictly rational use of (often new) materials, structural innovation and the elimination of ornament. It was also known as International Modernism or International Style, after an exhibition of modernist architecture in America in 1932 by the architect Philip Johnson. [c.f. website RIBA].

Large woodcut of the complicated seal of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia; two printed strips of blue-green paper bearing examples of the decreed stamps mounted on page 4. Unbound. Bottom edge slightly frayed, small chip at upper left, paper stock rumpled a bit and uncreased. Some light soiling but a very good copy. Edict of the Royal Chamber of the Kingdom of Sardinia decreeing a stamp tax for playing cards and tarot cards manifactured for export. The decree states that cards for export would bear a stamped band distinct from the one used on domestic cards. Examples of the bands with their stamps are attached to the edict. In the eighteenth century Turin became (and remains today) a major manufacturer of tarot and playing cards. Design and production of tarot were controlled by state monopoly under the Savoy kings, who taxed the cards according to a complex system. 1775. Madrid, Joachim Ibarra, 1775. 527pp. 4to. Original limp vellum with red leather titleshield (vellum a bit soiled but interior nice and clean). First edition of this very useful work giving numerous tables of exchange rates for the use of merchants and bankers. The work was much valued in the eighteenth century and a second edition did not appear until the nineteenth century.

(binding rubbed; titlepage soiled, bottom of titlepage repaired; upper margin wormholed throughout; partly strong wormholed with loss of some letters; error in pagination, jumps from leaf 134 to 137). With large woodcut coat of arms of father Fernando Alonso Gonzalez, general commisionar of Nueva-España.With its text in Latin, Spanish and Tarasco this work was known as "The Trilingual Manual", a semi-official ritual and pastoral manual for use by the Franciscan order in Michoacán. First published in 1697 this book was the first genuine and complete manual of the sacraments of Michoacán in the Tarasco language during the Novohispanic period. It was widely distributed by the order, to the point of becoming famous and having to print a second edition in 1731. Marbled sides, marbled endpapers. The orig. papercover bound in. Volume one is number 654 of 1000 copies and volume two is 624 of 700 copies. Signed Gruel on lower turn-in. A fine copy of this standard work on bookbindings published with an 18 years' interval. Leon Gruel (1841-1923) was the celebrated Parisian bookbinder, bibliophile, collector and scholar, whose manuel historique... is considered one of the standard reference works on the subject. Gruel's bindings are highly acclaimed for their technical skill and artistic sensibility... [c.f. Schm.-K. 1535; Mejer 373; Brenner 518].

No place, no date (but 19th century and most likely Paris). Manuscript. 30 folio sheets, each written upon on recto and verso in a contemporary hand. Disbound. The author at the beginning states: "J'ai l'honneur de vous remettre la note que vous m'avez demandée, en même temps que les analyses que j'ai eu (?), elles contiennent 30 pages, contenant l'analyse de 39 manuscrits.... " He is adressing his report to "Monsieur le Ministre" and says this first report contains a description of the scientific manuscripts in the Bibliothèque Royale.

Some (water)staining but still a good clean copy bound in nineteenth century 3/4 red morocco & red buckram boards. Edges stained red.Second, last and best edition of this collection of engravings of medals commemorating the real and imagined triumphs of Louis XV's reign.

History of the library of the Dukes of Burgundy, the greatest lay collection of northern Europe, which was started in the 12th century. The first great collector of manuscripts in the family was Philip the Good (1419-67), third Duke of Burgundy and ruler of the Netherlands, who also commissioned many manuscripts. The collection of the Dukes of Burgundy became the core of the Royal Library in Brussels. La Serna Santander (1752-1813) also provides lists of manuscripts in the library, records of the principal Belgian poets and musicians, Flemish literary societies, and 18th century donations to the library. First edition.

Orléans, chez Claude-Anne Le Gall, 1770. 36 pp. Contemporary wrappers (vellum spine, marbled paper and a yellow paper with handwritten note on it in ink in a contemporary hand: "Prospectus de Mr. Fyot. Novateur en géométrie; mais intéressante". Wrs. sl. soiled, ex-libris Michel Chasles on inside front cover. Handwritten note in ink at the top of the titlepage: "Ouvrage singulier, a garder". Scarce little booklet, of which I have only found two copies in libraries in France. The author was a former professor of mathematics at the Royal Academy of Lyon. Michel Chasles (1793 - 1880) was a French mathematician. He is is one of 72 scientists whose name is on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower. [OCLC only mentions two copies in France, none outside of France].

1817. Paris/Lyon, (1817). 488pp. Half red morocco. Marbled boards (hinges & corners a bit rubbed). (2 exlibris at the inside front cover & some light foxing & soiling throughout). Large paper copy. The present work is a collection of essays, most of which had already been published in magazines, collections, etc. but here for the first time they are published together (DBF, Michaud, Bigmore & Wyman). It contains a.o.: Les anciennes bibliothèques de Lyon; l'Histoire des manuscrits; l'Ecriture et le Papier chinois; l'Histoire abrégée de l'imprimerie. The number of copies printed is stated as 500 but our copy is not numbered. Bigmore & Wyman: The author was a corresponding member of the London Society of Antiquaries, a member of the French Institute, and of the Academy of Lyons. According to the Dict. Biogr. France, Antoine-François Delandine (Lyon 1756-1820) was also a librarian at the library of Lyon. An interesting collection.

Newtown, Bird & Bull Press, 1984. 500 copies. 4to. x,43,(i)pp. 50 plates (19 coloured and 3 folding) together with a duplicate suite of the coloured plates, an excellent copy in orig. qtr. morocco, bound by Gray Parrot with leather corner tips and decorated paper sides which reproduces a pattern from a paper in the Parkes Collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the duplicate suite of plates are in card folder and the whole work contained in a stout slipcase. This work reprints the rare and important Parkes Report on the Japanese Paper Industry compiled for the British Government in 1871. It is preceded by a study of other European writers on Japanese Paper and concludes with a fine facsimile of the woodblocks of the Kamisky Chohoki.

Small oblong folio (16 x 22 cm) Original blue paper wrappers (tear in the back cover & foxed throughout).The plates show the Roman alphabet (1 plate), English alphabet (2 plates), Old English alphabet (1 plate), Fraktur alphabet (2 plates), Chancellery alphabet (1 plate) and Chart alphabet (1 plate). This manual seems quite rare as it does not appear in Bonacini, nor on OCLC.

Edges sprinkled red. Top and bottom of spine damaged, hinges cracked but holding well. Bookplates on inside front cover and first flyleaf, some tiny manuscript notes in ink in an old hand on the first and last flyleaves. Some browning and foxing. Old repair on F4 but all in all a good copy.Photius (c. 810/820 - 893), one of the most powerful and influential church leaders of Constantinople, is also viewed as the most important intellectual of his time. His house was the centre of intellectual life in the Byzantine capital. The Myriobyblon contains abridgements and extracts of some 280 volumes of classical authors, the originals of which are now to a great extent lost and for which this is the most important surviving record.
