1638. Amsterdam, chez Ian Iansson, anno 1638. Engraved titlepage (ix) unnumbered leaves plus 30 double-page engraved plates. Browned throughout. (waterstain in right hand margin of first pages and first plates. (Early) twentieth century cloth binding (a bit soiled). Another edition of Les cinq rangs d'architecture. Edition titles vary. The first French language edition was published in The Hague in 1606. Includes plates engraved by Hondius from designs by Hans Vredeman de Vries (1527-1606?) and his son Paul Vredeman de Vries (1567-1630). Johannes Vredeman de Vries was a Dutch designer, architect and painter. He was greatly influenced by Serlio's work and he himself influenced his contemporaries through his engravings which were distributed through his publisher Hendrik Hondius in The Hague.

Le Roux with its own titlepage: Supplément à la IVeme édition de l'art de nager... par M. le Roux... Paris, Lamy, 1782), pp 6 - 363, (i)pp, 22 engraved plates of swimmers. Complete. Unopened, uncut copy in its original blue paper wrappers. A lovely copy, printed on a slightly blue paper, as issued, complete with the supplement by Le Roux that appeared in 1782.
Melchisedech Thevenot's (1620/1 - 1692) work was one of the first books on swimming. The first edition was published in 1696, translated into English in 1699 but the next French edition only appeared in 1769 when swimming become more popular and from then on, in the eighteenth century, it became the standard work on teaching people to swim.

The blank endpapers and the engraved frontispiece and plates all have a simple gilt frame painted by hand. Inside covers lined with green silk. Exlibris pasted on inside front cover. A lovely copy.The engraved frontispiece dedicates the book to 'Madame la Duchesse de Bourgogne', Marie-Adelaide of Savoy (1685 - 1712), mother of the French king Louis XV.

In a 3/4 blue maroc binding by Leon Gruel. Orwrs. bound-in. From the library of Gruel, with his bookplate pasted-in. One of 300 copies printed, this is no. 34 of 50 copies on papier vergé d'Hollande. This book was written by both Henri Marius-Michel (1846-1925) who launched an entirely new style of bookbinding towards the end of the nineteenth century and his father Jean Marius-Michel (1821-1890) who was an accomplished gilder who had in his early years worked for the firm of Gruel before setting up his own atelier in 1849. Original boards decorated with a handcoloured illustration. Printed in a limited edition of 40 copies, this is number 27, signed by the artist.

Name in ink on titlepage and another name in the lower margin of page 31. (small piece of vellum damaged on the front cover; lower corner of last page torn out with loss of text).A well used schoolbook printed in civilité types in a practical binding. The "Civilité" letter, was created by Robert Granjon in the sixteenth century. It was created to resemble handwriting and often used in books intended for children, like school books and conduct books, because it was believed to be easier to read. But it was very difficult for printers to use as they needed more type than for Roman or Italic typefaces and there were no small capitals and generally no numerals, so printers would have needed additional sorts to print these, which meant that printing in Civilité types was generally more expensive. Numerous woodcut illustrations, 2 full page plates of that show the top parts of the illustrations on pages 284 & 285, plus one double-page plate that is comprised in the pagination. The lower edge has the written text in a contemporary hand: 'Architet. di Alberti'. (binding a bit soiled and damaged, some light foxing).
The first quarto edition of Cosimo Bartoli's translation in Italian of Alberti's work that was originally published in Latin in 1485. It was translated by Bartoli in 1550 and printed in a folio edition. The title is within a reduced copy of the architectural woodcut border of the title page of the 1550 folio edition. An uncut copy in original brown paper wrappers, spine restored. A short title and a name in a contemporary hand in ink on the front cover. (paper slightly browned and some occasional very light foxing. Small old restorations in the margins of sheets G2, Y1 and plates 1 & 3; some wormholes in the inner margins of sheets O to Bb, all with old restaurations and some light staining in the margins of a few sheets). Original pencil drawing (paper size 18,5 x 23,5 cm) showing a boy with an ink roller. Signed: J.B. Lelier (?) and dated 11 juillet 1850. The verso shows a beggar, is alsow signed and is dated 1 octobre 1850. A charming original pencil drawing showing a young boy working in a lithographic printing office. He is wearing an ink-splattered apron and is in the process of inking a lithographic stone.

(some very tiny tears in the margin).A poster for booksellers to put in their shop windows to advertise this almanach that was published from 1863 onwards (until 1939). The illustration shows the cover of the almanach and in the background a village and agricultural tools.
