The film tells the story of a mentally retarded man named Sam (Penn) who fights for custody of his 7-year-old daughter (Fanning), and in the process teaches his cold-hearted lawyer (Pfeiffer) the value of love and family.

He served as a front for the blacklisted Albert Maltz on the Academy Award-nominated screenplay of Broken Arrow (1950). The Writers Guild of America, West, in its 1991 restoration of credit for the Broken Arrow screenplay to Maltz, expressed "a strong statement of appreciation for the courage of screenwriter Michael Blankfort" for his action in fronting for Maltz, in which Blankfort "risked being blacklisted himself to help his friend". Among his own screenplays were The Juggler (1953) and The Caine Mutiny. He was president of the Writers Guild of America, West from 1967 to 1969 and won the Guild's Valentine Davies Award (along with Norman Corwin) in 1972. At the beginning of the binder is the title page of one of the drafts used on the set, and it is extensively autographed by the director David O. Russell with charming and warm inscriptions from Jason Schwartzman, Isabelle Huppert, Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts, Ger Duany. For example: “Karen, (the eye in the centre of the hurricane) We needed you. Thank you so much. You were noticeably quiet! So rare on this set! A used and handled copy with some tape marks at the endpapers, a bit of fading to the cloth at the spine, some rubbing, and a few tiny edge tears without dust jacket. A classic Hollywood novel published under the pseudonym of Jane Shore and Silvia Schulman who had been employed as a personal secretary to famed producer David O. Selznick in the mid-1930’s, but had left her position to marry screenwriter Ring Lardner Jr., from whom she divorced in 1945. The narrative of the story is obviously based on Schulman’s experiences as an innocent in Hollywood and her adventures with Selznick and Lardner. It was no secret that Selznick was outraged by the book’s publication and tried unsuccessfully to prevent Orson Welles from adapting it for broadcast on January 27, 1939 on the CBS radio program Campbell Playhouse.
