Paris, Laurens, n.d. (190?). (iii) pp texts + 32 plates. All plates printed on the recto only and double page. All plates mounted on stubs. Original publisher's cloth binding (c. 21 x 28 cm). (binding with some light staining from water, espcially on the spine, Interior clean. Text pages browned, plates nice and clean). Scarce work that shows thirty-two flower inspired designs in pure art nouveau style. It seems to have been published in a small edition. Some copies have loose plates in a portfolio. Ours is bound in a publisher's binding. There seems to have been a limited edition of 500 copies but ours is not numbered. In the introduction the author says that he would like this to be an inspiration for designers.

Contents: 10 pieces of original art-work (gouache on paste-board) for the frames of calendars 1953-1959; 4 similar pieces without date indication; Paste up of a calendar for 1950; 53 proof sheets of calendars for 1942 subsequently used as scrap paper (pencil notes); Proof sheet for a calendar of 1987; Incomplete copy of a calendar for 1959. Various sizes, average 250mm x 330mm. An interesting file of original artwork and proofsheets for this calendar that still can be found in most houses in France. Ever since the nineteenth century, in December, French postmen give their customers a calendar for the next year, in return for a small sum of money.

Paris, Leviez, n.d. (circa 1766). Six etchings of fantasy flowers in the baroque style : one ornate title and five plates. (size: paper 34 x 24,5 cm, plates 24 x 16,5 cm). All plates are signed by Hess and five are signed by Pillemont.
Complete series of etchings by artist Jean Pillement (1728-1808) and engraved by Johann Heinrich Hess (1746-1816), published by Charles Leviez (1708-1778), printseller in Paris from 1766.Jean Pillement was a French painter and engraver known for his depictions of imaginary flowers and decors. In London, he publishes the first book concerning Chinese drawings with his theories about ornements and orientalism: " A New Book of Chinese Ornaments. Invented & Engraved by J. Pillement ", 1755.As the crown's official painter, he designed a Chinese salon for Stanislas II, king of Poland (1764-1795) around the same time these plates were drawn, and became in 1778 the painter for Marie-Antoinette.His work is later defined as quintessentially Rococo, even as the times and styles… Read More

Edition limited to 1370 copies, this is one of 1250 copies on antique laid.The Fleuron is considered to be one of the most notable typographic journals of the twentieth century. It achieved an international reputation not only for the quality of its articles but also for the quality of its production. As quoted by Grant Shipcot in 'Typographical Periodicals Between the Wars', the core of contributors to 'The Fleuron' were also "taking the typographical initiative of the time; this was particularly true of Stanley Morison, who as typographical adviser to the Monotype Corporation and later to Cambridge University Press exerted a very great influence." 1810. No place, no date. (but c. 1810 - 1820). Broadside, (8 x 18,5 cm), containing a poem advertising the New Lottery by Sivewright. Small tear at top carefully repaired. Lottery publicity explored every technique of contemporary popular literature. Give-aways included puzzles, jokes, cartoons and caricatures, jingles and poems, mock-valentines, and other attention-giving novelties. In many respects lottery campaigns were well in advance of their time. In scope, ingenuity, and not least in volume their operations far exceeded everything that advertising had hitherto conceived.

Bookseller's label on front cover (Wm. Curry, Junr. & Co. - Booksellers and Stationers - 9 Upper Sackville Strt.) First edition of this 'best books' guide to French literature. Ventouillac (1796-1834) was born in Calais and emigrated to England in 1816 where he became a professor of French literature at King's College in London and published books on French literature. The present Dibdinesque work lists 1250 titles all of whom are carefully classified and have concise but useful notes (best editions, bibliographical descriptions etc.) by the author or other critics. The introduction gives a survey of French literature from the 'Roman de la Rose' to Victor Hugo. The book was highly praised in the London Literary Gazette: "We cannot do better than recommend this valuable work."

A lovely and quite scarce model book for interior decorators and painters. It shows the colours and motifs in use in the Jugendstil period. [OCLC only shows a copy at Harvard].
