Description:
Glasguae (Glasgow): Ricardi Priestley, 1825. Reprint. Hardcover. g. Octavo. CXL, 419, [1], 733, [1]pp. Original 3/4 calf over marbled paper covered boards with gold lettering and tooling on spines. Engraved frontispiece. Additional engraved title page dated 1824. Exquisite edition of the "Satires" which are a collection of of satirical poems by the Latin author Juvenal written in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD. Juvenal is credited with sixteen known poems divided among five books; all are in the Roman genre of Satire, which, at its most basic in the time of the author, comprised a wide-ranging discussion of society and social mores in dactylic hexameter. These five books were discrete works, and there is no reason to assume that they were published at the same time or that they are identical in theme or in approach. The poems are not individually titled, but translators have often added titles for the convenience of readers. Roman Satura was a formal literary genre rather than being simply… Read More

Hannover: Kestner-Gesellschaft, 1979. First edition. Softover. Near fine condition. Square Octavo. 327 (1)pp. Original photo-illustrated stiff wraps with orange lettering on cover and spine. Man Ray, who generated Dada in New York as Max Ernst and Johannes Baargeld in Cologne, Schwitters in Hannover, Hannah Höch and Raoul Hausmann in Berlin, is the custodian of "The Classical" among all of them. He confides blatantly to beauty, to sensuality - his planned break lines between the assumptions of the audience and the standards of photographic work Man Ray relocated into the head of the viewer. With contributions by a number of critics and full page phtographs of works by Hans Arp, Johannes Bargeld, André Breton, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Georges Grosz, Raoul Hausmann, John Heartfield, Hannh Höch, Man Ray, Lázlo Moholy-Nagy, Kurt Schwitters, Tristan Tzara, Piet Zwart and others. Description:
Paris: Rive Gauche, Productions, 1981. First French edition. Hardcover. vg. Folio. 342, [2]pp. Original Photo-illustrated dust-jacket over black cloth with gold lettering on spine. Frontispiece. The character of Surrealism had been crystallizing over the previous five years when, in 1924, Andre Breton's Manifeste du Surrealisme defined the word. As conceived in those early days it was not so much a formal movement as a spiritual orientation, embracing ethics and politics as well as the arts. Recourse to dreams, to the unconscious, to chance factors, to automatism dictated the Surrealist mode. Patrick Waldberg prefaces this collection of key documents with an overview of Surrealism from its beginnings to the present time. This volume is profusely illustrated throughout with hundreds of color and b/w photographic reproductions. Text in French. Dust-jacket, binding and interior in overall very good condition.

Reprinted from "The Jewish Messenger" of March 11th, 1881. Publisher's advertising on back wrapper. The Daggatun was a nomad tribe of Jewish origin living in the vicinity of Tementit, in the oasis of Tuat in the Moroccan Sahara. A first account of the Daggatun was given by Rabbi Mordechai Abi Serour of Akka (Morocco), who in 1857 travelled through the Sahara to Timbuktu, and whose account of his journey was published in the "Bulletin de la Société de Géographie." According to R. Mordecai, the Daggatun live in tents and resemble the Berber Tuaregs, among whom they live, in language, religion, and general customs. They are fairer in complexion than the generality of African Jews, and are still conscious of their origin. They are subject to the Tuaregs, who do not intermarry with them. R. Mordecai is authority for the statement that their… Read More
