The bookplate measures 3 5/8” x 4 7/8” and depicts a charming outdoor scene with a young woman lying down reading a book with a tent nearby and mountains in the background. Illustrated. Near fine slightly dust soiled copy with some very minor edge wear to the extremities, primarily at the top and bottom of the spine. The first study of Griffith’s work written during his lifetime and still important. John Gilbert (1895 - 1936) was a strikingly handsome leading man, best known for his roles in such classic films as Cameo Kirby, Monte Cristo, Arabian Love, He Who Gets Slapped, The Merry Widow, The Big Parade, Bardelys the Magnificent, and four films with Greta Garbo - Flesh and the Devil, Love (an adaptation of Anna Karenina), A Woman of Affairs, and Queen Christina.

Inscribed “Pour Len, homage, Dali.” The drawing is one of Dali’s stark landscapes with two of his swirling figures and a large Daliesque ant (like those depicted in his famous oil painting Persistence of Memory). Large oblong folio, with fine black & white gravure illustrations and 17 tipped-in color plates. Fine in the original clear acetate dust jacket and in the especially rare cardboard box with printed label which is in very good condition.
