1777. A Avignon, chez F. Seguin, 1777 & Lyon, l'auteur. xvi,207pp. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf. Without the mezzotint portrait of De Los Rios which is of rare occurrence. With contemporary exlibris that says: "De la Bibliothèque de M.r Lejourdan Con.er en l'Amirauté" (some foxing). First edition. François de Los Rios (Antwerp 1727 - Lyon 1820) was born in a family of merchants. He began his working life as a bookseller's clerk in Paris and Italy; later on he visited England and the Netherlands and in 1767 he finally settled in Lyon as a bookseller. During his time in Lyon he sold many important books, especially Italian and Spanish books coming from the libraries of the Jesuits in Lyon, Tournon and Macon, and from the private libraries of the abbés Piole and Gindre. Apart from this work he wrote three other books, one of which (Oeuvres), published with a fictitious London address in 1789, is more or less autobiographic. In the introduction… Read More

Paris, L. Guérin et Charles Robustel, 1715. Folio. (12) ff, 810 pp. Five engraved plates, two finely engraved headpieces, & several engravings in the text (some full-page). Half red calf binding, marbled boards. Coislin commisioned Bernard de Montfaucon, founder of Greek paleography, to compile the catalogue, an extraordinary piece of scholarship. Venice, Altobellum Salicatium, 1603. Folio. Two parts in one volume. Folio. [32], 530, [2], 594, (ii), (24) pages. With the woodcut device of the Society of Jesus on the titlepage. Contemporary annotation in ink on the titlepage. Contemporary vellum (spine heavily damaged but holding well). Titlepage with a few stains but a good copy of an important work.Revised edition of this important and rare bibliography that was first published in 1593."The Index of Prohibited Books functioned as a barrier against the spread of reformist thought, but its efficacy at containment was only partial in spite of the powerful sanctions which supported the prohibition. The Roman Church therefore organized a counteroffensive aimed at reconquering the territories it had lost and reestablished its cultural and doctrinal ascendancy. Of special interest is the work by the Jesuit Antonio Possevino, Bibliotheca Selecta, which constituted the basic tool in a strategic plan developed with great care and clarity. 1775. London, 1775. vi,149,[1]pp. (with the leaf of Libri Omissi present). Uncut copy. Disbound. A nice, uncut copy of this important sale catalogue which has been priced throughout by a contemporary hand. Dr. Anthony Askew (1722-1772), was a great collector, who traveled on the Continent and whose achievements in the medical field are quite eclipsed by his proficiency as a classical scholar. As a bookcollector, he is said to have attempted to secure a complete series of all the Greek classics ever published; he purchased privately R. Mead's Greek manuscripts, the papers of Dr. Taylor and some fine early classics codices from the library of the Maffei family. His sale (13 February 1775) was a great success and was attended by the Paris bookseller De Bure, who bought for the Duc de La Vallière and other French collectors (including the King of France).(De Ricci p. 52).[Peignot, p. 78 Catalogue assez curieux, surtout pour les anciennes éditions; Taylor 231]

Description:
1815. London, Thomas Davidson, for the Proprietors of the Collection, 1815. viii,481pp. Title printed in black and red. Frontispiece. Title-vignette and portraits. Description of 956 early books - with prices and synoptical Index. Original 3/4 calf binding, marbled bds. (boards and spine rubbed). A remarkable collection with a chequered history. Originally formed by Thomas Park, the collection was sold to Thomas Hill for an annuity, then sold to Octavius Gilchrist a grocer of literary leanings who finally sold it to Longmans. This ambitious catalogue fared badly and the remaining books were sold at auction in 1818. Many of them ended up in the Bridwell library. The catalogue however, is still cited as a reference work for early English Literature.

Red leather spine label with gilt titling.Uncommon and scarce catalogue of the important library of Carolus Major (16.. - 1766). Major, a well-known book collector, was a canon in Mechelen and known as "the Van Hulthem of his time". The sale of his collection was one of the major sales in the Low Countries of the period. Archer Taylor mentions the catalogue: "Catalogues are of course very good reflections of tastes and interests in book-collecting. One example that concerns books considered as physical objects without regard to their contents will be sufficient. The Bibliotheca ex omni facultate librorum quos reliquit reverendus dominus Carolus Major (Mechlin, 1767: at [the Lindesiana copy]) contains (pp. 655-658) a "Musaeolum peregrinantium, seu bibliotheca ambulatoria in formis minimis," listing 58 titles.
