Stuttgart: W. Spemann; Union Deutsche Verlagsgesellschaft, 1892. First edition. Hardcover. g. Quarto. XVI, 506, [2], VIII, 563, [1]pp. 3/4 morocco over burgundy cloth with gold lettering on spine. Hans Vaihinger published this commentary on Kant's Kritik der reinen Vernunft (Critique of Pure Reason) in honor of its centennial anniversary. Indeed, the year 1881 saw the appearance of the first volume of Vaihinger's massive commentary. On the basis of this work Vaihinger was called to Halle as Extraordinarius in 1884. He had hoped that the second volume would appear shortly; however, lecture preparations demanded far more time than he had initially thought. This, coupled with poor health and failing sight, continued to delay work on the second volume. He finally completed it and it appeared in 1892. Vaihinger's commentary was his first major contribution to the back to Kant movement. Binding heavily rubbed on spine and along edges, with abrasion to leather. Previous owner's name on free front endpaper.…

Description:
Budapest: Royal Hungarian Ministry of Interior, 1944. First edition. Paperback. g+. Quarto. 14, [2]pp. On October 15, 1944, the Fascist and anti-Semite Nyilas (Arrow Cross) took power in Hungary, with the 'Nation Leader' Ferenc Szálasi as Prime Minister, and Gábor Vajna as Interior Minister. One of their first acts was to reconsider the list of the Jewish people who were exempted by the previous governments from the enacted laws against the Jews (Jews married to non-Jews, or on whom higher military distinctions were conferred in the World War). This signed printed document is thus a new revised (and dramatically downsized) list of less than 600 Jews exempted from the Hungarian anti-Jewish laws. Its last page bears the original signature in ink of Interior Minister Gábor Vajna*, and the stamped seal of his ministry. Until the spring of 1944 the position of hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews can be described as relatively safe - this despite the fact that the Jewish Laws made their lives…

The the photo-portrait was originally taken by photographer Lette Valeska in Jerusalem in 1950. Given the photographer's usual working methods, the photo was probably taken at Buber's home. Inscribed on the back of the photograph by Valeska, and dated in red pen. In very good condition. * Lette Valeska (1885-1985) was a German-American photographer, sculptor and painter. Practicing photography since the age of 12 years old, Valeska emigrated to Los Angeles in 1938, on the suggestion of her childhood friend, artist Galka Scheyer. By the 1940s she had become well known as an outstanding photographer of children and went on to find success in the Hollywood community as a portrait photographer. Later, she took up painting at age 50 and sculpting at age 70.
