1800. No place (but Paris), no date. (but 17 March 1756). 8vo. 12pp. Prices and some names in a contemporary hand. Full calf binding, spine, covers and inner dentelles goldtooled. Marbled endpapers. With the exlibris of "Louis de la Forets Comte d'Armaille" pasted on the inside front cover. (spine restored). All edges gilt. The name "Racine" has been added in ink in a contemporary hand. The catalogue describes 138 items. On the same day the collection of books of M. Racine was sold: "Catalogue des livres et estampes de feu monsieur R***", a catalogue compiled by G. Martin, consisting of 52 pages and on page 52 the present catalogue is announced. [c.f. Paris, L. Potier, 1865. xii, 236 pp. Original printed wrappers. Uncut. (wrs. sl. dam. and a bit dustoiled, interior nice and clean).A collection that is rich in bindings. The catalogue contains 1707 items, many with interesting notes. Also with names of previous owners and names of binders. Previous owners are Grolier, Maïoli, de Thou, Comte d'Hoym, Mme de Pompadour, d'Hangard, Soubise, Paris, etc. And among the binders we find Du Seuil, Boyet, Padeloup, Derôme, etc. The collection was formed by Prince Michel Radziwill (1744 - 1831) who lived in Paris around 1788 - 1790. The library was transported to Poland to safeguard it during the French Revoluition and was auctioned in France many years later as the collection is essentially a French collection,

Tranches dorées. Très bon exemplaire. "An excellent, largely descriptive and non-technical work on gemstones which for many years enjoyed top position among French language gemological treatises. Despite its age, it still proves to be rewarding reading and one that is recommended as a permanent reference. (?) the vigorous, handsome wood engravings are excellent and depict mining scenes, snow crystals, the famous cave of smoky quartz crystals found in the Swiss Alp near Tiefengletscher in 1867, jewelry, engraved gems, etc." Cf. Charming woodcut of cherubs looking at a painting at the beginning of the catalogue. 19th century blue half cloth binding, blue paper boards. This sale was anonymous but some copies (including an earlier copy that I owned) mention that this is the collection "Lami, bookseller". This must be Pierre-Michel Lamy (17.. - 18..) who went bankrupt in 1808 but seemed to be in business again from 1812 onwards. According to a copy annotated by Regnault-Delalande the total amount of the sale was 1365,55 francs.

No information is given about owners. Apparently it was a catalogue made in great haste as the introduction says that: "le peu de temps que nous avons eu pour mettre en ordre cette Collection, ne nous ayant pas permis d'entrer dans de grands détails..."

Contains 68 plates of engraved monograms (late 19th century) designed & engraved by H. Renoir,58 rue Nve.St. Augustin, Paris and printed by Sarazin, Paris. All letters of the alphabet are depicted in all possible combinations (two or three plates a letter) + 1 plate of general monograms. H. Renoir is Pierre-Henri Renoir (1832-1903), an engraver of gems who had published several works on engraving and design. He was the elder brother of impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In fact the first time Zola saw a painting by Auguste Renoir he thought it was by his older brother Henri. Uncommon sample book.

The first French national bibliography was published in 1584 by François Grudé de la Croix du Maine and contained a.o. an auto-bibliography of several hundred works on French history of which none has survived, earning Grudé in some quarters the title of impostor; also, the plan for a French Royal Library - this was to be arranged in bookcases according to a classification by numbers.
