Contemporary calf binding (binding solid but top hinge damaged & small bit of leather lost on spine & a cut in the middle of the pages 101/102, without loss). Edges sprinkled red.Two ex-libris pasted on inside front cover, name of the top one erased. A manuscript note on the inside back cover says: "A M. Paris, Laurens, n.d. (190?). (iii) pp texts + 32 plates. All plates printed on the recto only and double page. All plates mounted on stubs. Original publisher's cloth binding (c. 21 x 28 cm). (binding with some light staining from water, espcially on the spine, Interior clean. Text pages browned, plates nice and clean). Scarce work that shows thirty-two flower inspired designs in pure art nouveau style. It seems to have been published in a small edition. Some copies have loose plates in a portfolio. Ours is bound in a publisher's binding. There seems to have been a limited edition of 500 copies but ours is not numbered. In the introduction the author says that he would like this to be an inspiration for designers.

Red leather spine label with gilt titling.Uncommon and scarce catalogue of the important library of Carolus Major (16.. - 1766). Major, a well-known book collector, was a canon in Mechelen and known as "the Van Hulthem of his time". The sale of his collection was one of the major sales in the Low Countries of the period. Archer Taylor mentions the catalogue: "Catalogues are of course very good reflections of tastes and interests in book-collecting. One example that concerns books considered as physical objects without regard to their contents will be sufficient. 1803. (1803). Second illustrated edition, (Madrid), imprenta de la viuda de Vallin, calle de Bordadores, 1813. 88pp + 12 plates. In a hcalf binding. Marbled bds. (bds rubbed & damaged, but repaired). Decorated spine (rubbed). (2nd flyleaf has a small tear). On an early system of stenography, specifically devised for the Spanish phonetics. The author, a member of the Economical Society of Madrid and of the Academy of San Fernando, proposes a syllabic system of transcription, whereas the systems previously elaborated were literary. In the introduction the author discusses in detail the stenographic methods elaborated in England and France and their drawbacks concerning their application to the Spanish language. The last paragraph discusses the form of the pens conceived by Marti for his tachygraphic system. These pens are depicted on plate 12. Of this title several editions as well as a translation into Portuguese were published.

The four volumes of this collection bound in two plus the separately published pricelist. The complete five volumes of the magnificent library of Baron Gerard Meerman (1722 - 1771) and his son Jan (1753 - 1818), both of whom did extensive research in the history of printing. The separately published part four of the auction catalogue of the Bibliotheca Meermannia, the magnificent library of Baron Gerard Meerman (1722 - 1771) and his son Jan (1753 - 1818), both of whom did extensive research in the history of printing. The collection was sold in The Hague in 1824. Sir Thomas Phillipps bought much material from this sale, particularly from the manuscript portion. Many of the manuscripts came from the Collège the Clermont, once the property of the Jesuits in Paris. The present catalogue of the manuscripts describes 1100 MSS and the whole sale realized more than 131,000 guilders, of which almost 32,000 for the manuscripts alone.

An important standard work, thoroughly researched, well organized and rich in quotes from acts and in many respects still an important work.

In the publisher's textured salmon paper-covered boards and gilt-stamped brown cloth spine. The first re-edition of the earliest English bookbinding manuals, both are extremely rare in the original edition. One of 500 copies only.

Our copy does not have a plate 39 or 40. Plate 39 is replaced by the titlepage of Album du Moyen Age.... and plate 40 shows the Cathedral of Strasbourg from the same album, numbered plate 40). Are there two plates lacking and replaced by two others? It seems there never was a plate 39. (see Bonacini 1182 but with date of c. 1840). (plates 22-33 browned).

Binding very rubbed and top of spine damaged, but a lovely, clean, uncut copy of this very scarce catalogue.First edition of this monumental catalogue of the collection of Greek manuscripts owned by Henri-Charles du Cambout de Coislin, bishop of Metz (1664 - 1732) and formed by his great grandfather Pierre Séguier, chancellor of France (1588 - 1682). Coislin commisioned Bernard de Montfaucon, founder of Greek paleography, to compile the catalogue, an extraordinary piece of scholarship.
