This copy has been extensively extra-illustrated in the 1990s by Navajo artist Ernest Franklin and then bound in an amazing designer binding by the Dragonfly Bindery-Studio. The late Ernest Franklin was famous for his illustrations of the novels of Tony Hillerman, and in this special copy of this classic Pulitzer Prize winning novel of Navajo life, Franklin has drawn and added 10 original full page signed watercolor illustrations of the text. Additionally there is a signed ink drawing portrait of the book’s protagonist Laughing Boy, plus 21 small pen & ink Franklin drawings each at the beginning of the individual chapters. Crease from folding, else a very good lightly used copy with a hint of dust soiling in printed wrappers. The film was a mostly silent adaptation of Edna Ferber’s original novel with some songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II added from their musical stage production.

This large engraved bookplate is a striking design drawn by Barrymore, himself, with his initials at the bottom showing the masks of comedy and tragedy, entwined in a thorny tree with flowing banners reading: “John Barrymore - Ex Libris” beneath which is a pen and an artist’s brush. A two volume set; volume one - 405 pages, volume two - 426 pages. A handsome set bound in dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and front boards and gilt, white and blue decoration and ‘Peace on Earth and Goodwill Towards Men’ gilt stamped to the front boards. Tissue protected frontispieces in both volumes. Very good condition with some minor use and a bit of edge wear. A biography of Henry of Navarre (Henry IV) who, on the death of Henry III in 1589, ruled as the King of France from 1589 to 1610.
